Brown PLME Early Decision Chance? From TheChance!

Your second essay sounds better to me after you elaborated on it. At first it seemed like you mentioned the liberal arts aspect of PLME just to satisfy the adcoms, but the fact that you actually looked into the writing programs indicates that it does actually appeal to you.

A lot of people say they want to be doctors because doctors help people, which is what your first essay sounds like. It’s not a great reason because there are a lot of professions that involve helping people, and the adcoms may doubt your true passion (does he just want to be a doctor because he can help people, happens to be good at science, and can make a lot of money?). If you made it clear that being a doctor is meant for you, I think you’ll be good.

By the way, I am being extremely critical. I think you’re an amazing candidate. I can’t imagine that there are that many other candidates who have your combination of strong academics, medical ECs, and non-medical ECs. I think a lot of people forget that you are not competing against flawless ideal human beings, but other high school students who have their own weaknesses. If you successfully conveyed your passion, I think you have an excellent chance.

Thanks a lot for the help and moral boost CORVIDS, it means a lot!

I’d say your service and research related work really helped. I spoke with admissions just curious about this (no way I’d get in- not enough med work) and the main thing that was stressed was the experience in research and service, not standardized testing. Besides, your scores look good. I wouldn’t worry. You look like a really strong applicant imo. Just curious, but do you apply to Brown AND this program? Like can you get into Brown but not this? Do you have to apply separately?

lalala
did you really speak with admissions? (and got no way i’d get in - not enough med work)
Please see bruno14’s post, he is current in plme, and did not do any med work

I spoke with someone who worked in admissions, yes. I just asked about the program and he spoke about what the program is looking for. No one told me I would not get in as no one knew anything about me at that point. I just decided for myself that there’s no use in even applying, especially when I’m not 100% certain I want to get my MD.

lalala
Since you spoke with them already. It would be very nice that you can share the info. – what the plme program is looking for?

Thanks everyone for your kind words. It really means a LOT to me, positive or negative, and I really appreciate it. In such a competitive atmosphere, any sympathies or explanations are a GREAT help! And yeah, as WantBrown said, it would be great if you could share some more info on Brown itself lalala.

I’ve never had the privalege of visiting there, so learning more about it would be wonderful.

Also, WantBrown, I got your message. I will check, but last time I checked, I don’t believe that it did show that the letter of rec was there. This was most likely due to it being added to my supplemental material, and not my two main teacher recommendations.

I can tell you though that my lab head did recieve confirmation from Brown that they had recieved it (2 emails actually, one for the fax, and one for the physical letter).

TheChance
Thank you very much

Sorry I couldn’t be of much more help WantBrown :(

I checked today again, and nothing has really changed :/

BUMP

Decisions are coming up soon! Does anyone know if it is disadvantageous if my particular high school does not weight honors or advanced courses? Only IB or AP courses are given a weighting. I would think Brown would do its own calculations for GPA, but just wondering if that will have any impact.

Thanks!

Nah, I´m sure that the Brown will notice the Honors next to your courses and they will weight them on their own scale or at the very least compare them to other kids who have honors courses.

lelouch
How do you know and are sure that Brown will notice it?
Any source?

Ya, my counselor asked the brown admissions office about that because I was worried about the same thing also. I mean its not like they will know from your school that you don´t weight the honors courses right? But they will still compare you to others who had honors courses, and Im sure you know this but most colleges make their own gpa and they all convert it to 4.0 scale so even if they dont add the weight its not your fault its the schools so they will take that into account.

lelouchFTW
Thank you very much

how did you guys do

please see the other thread
