Brown PLME only early affects Brown regular during regular decision?

If I only checked off the box for “PLME only” for early decision, will I have a less chance of getting into regular Brown (not PLME) for regular decision? I’ve heard mixed responses :frowning: Thank you!

There’s no data on this, of course. However, I don’t think it would affect your regular decision, since it was only relevant for ED.

Thanks! just some people have told me that when you only check off PLME early it shows less interest in Brown University which affects regular decision

No I don’t think it really affects RD admission. Brown understands that there are many more students applying proportionally for the limited number of PLME slots, who would still love to come to Brown, but need to look at all their options if not getting into PLME. I don’t think I’ve seen any ED where the student was rejected PLME, but deferred to RD (I think they just call all those deferred). The PLME pool tends to for the most part be very qualified applicants. The one place where it might make a difference, all things considered otherwise equal, would be the student who ONLY wants PLME acceptance. If that came across to admissions, (sometimes in the interview, sometimes in a reference letter, sometimes in the gist of the essays (not sure why a student would “shoot themselves in the foot” that way, unless being blatantly honest)) then I might suppose that once rejected from PLME, admissions might have a reason to not “waste” the regular admissions slot.

I’m not sure I understand the question, but I do know a student who applied ED to Brown and checked the box that said she might not go to Brown if not accepted to PLME. She was deferred ED and denied RD, and an admissions officer told me that she did “shoot herself in the foot” by checking that box.

There is no “box that said she might not go to Brown if not accepted to PLME.”

The box asked if an early decision PLME applicant would like to be considered an early decision applicant for Brown undergraduate as well.

It is a perfectly understandable box to check. I don’t see how this would affect anyone negatively.

lovelyday, there used to be a check box as I described it. It existed for years on the application. The application has changed a lot in recent years and apparently that question was removed.

lovelyday0, that box is the same thing. It is basically saying “If I don’t get into PLME, I don’t want to commit to Brown for ED.” I agree that is shouldn’t affect anyone negatively but I also fully understand how it could. It basically shows that an applicant is not committed to Brown undergrad in the way they are committed to Brown undergrad+med. I.e. being in a BA/MD program is more important than being at Brown. With the yield game what it is, it makes sense that this could be used against a student when there are plenty of applicants for whom Brown undergrad is the ultimate prize.

o no :frowning: I really do love the Brown school by itself even without PLME. It’s still my number 1 choice. Is there anything I should do to let Brown know that Brown undergrad is one of my top choices? not just PLME? I really hope i did not “shoot myself in the foot” :(

Any applicant who suggests that they are applying to Brown for the PLME program only and not for Brown undergrad will suffer in the admissions process. Brown would prefer not to accept students who are only interested in the med school program.

omgitzpun, did you apply ED? Were you deferred? If you didn’t get into PLME, would you still go to Brown? Did you write a follow-up letter to admissions expressing that Brown is your first choice? If not, this is your chance to do that.

I applied early decision to only PLME and unfortunately got deferred :frowning: but even without PLME, Brown university is my top choice. I wrote the email but can someone tell me if this is ok? Thanks! Should I say something along the lines of “I hope the admissions office considers this factor?”

My name is _____ and I applied early decision for Brown University and its PLME program. Although, I checked off the box that I would like to only be considered for PLME for early decision, I want to let you know that Brown University, with or without PLME, has always been my first choice school and that I have full intent of going there if admitted to Brown University.

Sincerely,

Such communication would probably carry more weight if it came directly from your school’s college counselor (unless you don’t go to the type of school where your counselor is in direct communication with people at the school).

I also would probably include at least one sentence explaining why you didn’t check the box. If it was because you need to compare aid if you don’t have the med school safety net, that seems legit as would other reasons, but as you have currently written my first thought is “if we were always #1, why didn’t you check the box?”

My twin daughters applied to PLME - one ED, the other RD. On ED app, she checked (unchecked?) the box that indicated she would not go to Brown if she didnt get accepted to PLME. She was deferred to RD (much sorrow). But then, both were eventually accepted to PLME during RD (much happiness and cheers). (I think) both are going.

In hindsight, I dont know if that box had anything to do their/her acceptance (or deferral). Maybe Brown wanted to assess both applications as a package - we can only speculate. I do know that our rationale for selecting it at the time was that that was truly what we thought…that PLME was a key item that distinguished Brown from some of the other schools, and it would float to the top of the pile if they got it. It probably wasnt the best way to increase their chances, but it was an honest assessment/decision on our part…

Pugsrule: that’s the third set of PLME twin girls that I know of! One pair in the class of 2013, one in 2015. Must be a trend…

There’s an additional pair of twins in the 2016 class, bruno14. haha. I think it is a trend!
