Hi guys. I just had a few questions about the Brown PLME program.

1.) When applications are read and evaluated, will the Brown PLME supplement essay be read along with the others in making a final acceptance decision? I was wondering because somebody’s PLME essay could make them really “shine,” but then… Would you have to be accepted into Brown first, and then have them read your PLME essay?

2.) Does the Brown PLME program allow you to graduate with a phd and md?

3.) Could you potentially major in something in the liberal arts while enrolled in the PLME program?

4.) Is the program binding?

Sorry if some answers are obvious, but I just couldn’t manage to find the answers to these. Thanks! By the way… I’m a sophomore at the moment, so don’t think I’d post a question this late into the school year :)!

This was answered in a recent thread. The regular admissions officer has your plme essay in the file. Find the thread for dets.

I don’t believe so–PhD admission is an entirely different process that can’t begin as a high schooler

YES, many do

Wait a bit and someone who knows more about plme should be along, don’t know why I am even answering.

The PLME essay is in the file, but I believe they don’t typically look at it. If you’re accepted to Brown, then they’ll send the whole file over to the PLME admissions crew (totally different group).

No, not unless you apply out to another med school. You can, however, take a year between college and med school and do a master’s or something like that.

Definitely. I’m a music concentrator, many others choose areas outside the sciences. That’s the whole point of PLME.

No, it is not. You can choose to leave the PLME program at any point during your Brown education - some do, just because they’ve realized that going to medical school isn’t the exact right path for them. Others choose to leave during their senior year because they decide that they want to apply out to other medical schools. These students lose their spots in the Brown med school by doing this.

Okay, thank you everybody for the information :)! I want to study medicine, but I love economics and political science… Such a life crisis I’m in, haha! I still have 2 more years to make up my mind, so I guess that’s somewhat comforting :P…
