Most high school seniors are unsure about eventual career choices. What factors led you to decide on a career in medicine? And why did you choose to apply to the PLME in pursuit of this career?

I started writing my essay for this question but I’m sort of in a problem now. I want to go into psychiatry so I wrote about why I am interested in psychiatry but not about medicine… I’m really confused about this question.

Am I suppose to write about medicine in general? What if most of my extracurricular show an interest in psychology?

Oh, also another question. If I plan to go into psychiatry and go to PLME, is it better to indicate biology or chemistry as one of my interest in major or psychology (most of my extracurricular are about psychology)?

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated!! Thank you.

Bumping when you are at the top, or on the first page for that matter, does nothing.

You may choose any major, there is not requirement for PLME, or med school. Wanting to go to med school indicates an interest in medicine, as opposed to studying psychology without planning med school. Sure you can write about why you are planning to choose psychiatry. Really you have to figure this out yourself, how to express your interest in this program and why you are seeking it.

If most of your extracurriculars are in psychology and you’re applying to PLME, I must assume that you’ve considered the difference between a career in psychology vs. a career in psychiatry. Why did you make that decision? Why go towards the medicine side of things rather than clinical psychology?

Re: majors/concentrations. PLME does not care what your intended concentration is. If you want to concentrate in psychology, state that.

Thank you for the replies! Do you think that I should write about why I want to major in psychiatry specifically or should I talk about medicine in general. Most of the other essays I read talked about their interest in medicine generally but I am very interested in psychiatry. Do you suggest that I write about medicine in general or make psychiatry my main focus? Thanks again!

I’d try to stick to medicine in general. Speaking honestly, most students moving from high school to college to med school will change their mind in terms of their intended specialty, and you don’t want to seem as though psychiatry is your only interest. It’s fine to mention it as an interest, of course.
