Nervous mom here. My son knows what he is going to do. I think his is not the wisest choice. I am resisting the urge to intervene. Coming here so I can talk about this out of earshot. What should he do and why? IF you were a parent what would you want your kid to do. What would you advise. Son has wanted to be an MD since he was 10. He also loves to surf and play music and read novels. So he is picking Brown. Want to weigh in? Signed, mom with too much time on my hands.
If I were your son and knew I wanted to be an MD then Brown PLME would be my choice as well. Congratulations on his amazing success and wonderful options.
Give that young man a hug and go order some Brown hoodies, t-shirts, mugs, and a bumper sticker in your spare time!
What are your concerns? Not sure how to help you if I don’t know what’s bothering you.
I knew a lot of kids in Brown’s accelerated Med program “back in the day”. The program has been retooled since then, but I think it attracts the same kind of kid. Now that we are all “old”, and the docs have been practicing for decades, I don’t think that my friends regretted their decision. It was intense and they worked hard, but they didn’t have the insane pressure that the premeds did. They could take classes outside of their comfort zone and not worry that one B was going to derail their entire career.
Yale is outstanding, I don’t know anyone my age who was an undergrad at Yale and then went to med school, but I have several contemporaries (one of my own doctors) who are Yale med grads.
If your son has a scintilla of doubt about medicine (and knowing since he was 10 doesn’t convince me… if that were the norm, the world would be filled with ballerinas and fire fighters and cowboys) then Yale would get my nod.
So maybe have a discussion (not an intervention, a discussion) about WHY medicine, rather than try to convince him of anything???
I wouldn’t go to either Yale or Brown for surfing, btw. The Rhode Island shoreline is beautiful but not close to campus and best enjoyed in July and August. The CT shoreline is also beautiful- but not the part close to Yale which is an industrial waterfront, although there are rocky, New England style beaches not too far from New Haven.
Unless there are large cost differences involved, seems like a student who is strongly interested in medicine would strongly favor the express lane to medical school (Brown PLME in this case).
