Brown-risd Dual Degree Program

Hi
so, I need to get in college. and I REAlly want this dual degree. please anyone tell me if my “plan of action” is actually o.k. and if i have chances into getting into brown.

ok, here goes.

GPA: 4.14 (out of circa 4.7)
I was a IB Diploma candidate but switched schools senior year so I had to drop it. But I took higher level courses in Art, English, and Math. Senior year I have IBHL math IBHL english, IBHL art, sculpture, APUS, APSpanish, APBiology. So i think my courses are sufficiently rigorous.

SATreasoning: 2150
math 720 reading 720 writing 710
SAT subj: literature 690 (ouch) math2c 800

I plan to retake SAT Reasoning october, and Subject tests november (including literature)

Activities:
I was in the student council for junior year, was prom coordinator, i am in the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, MUN, jazz choir, art club, spanish club, I created my own art service club called P.A.R.T.Y., I was in various charity clubs including Reachout, recycling club, hope foundation fundraising club I am the president in my youth group in church, I play both in the orchestra in church and sing in the choir. umm what else. Oh i was in JV basketball but i suck in sports so I learned an indian classical dance Odissi. btw I lived in India for the first three years of highschool and sernior year i am in egypt. exotic huh?! :P

I am planning to apply early decision to brown, and regular decision to RISD. My activity short answer in common app is about my P.A.R.T.Y. club, and my essay i think will be about Odissi. For the brown supplement, I talked about Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, and

What do you guys think??? possible? bleak?? ah… My art focuses around political situations alot, and commentaries on cultures. ex) north korean propaganda poster. I want to major in international relations in Brown and either graphic design or painting in RISD.

or should i just give up on RISD and apply to brown with my artwork attached as supplemental information?? I am regular-ing to RISD because my portfolio is far from done, and I am too swamped with work and SAT’s to really do anything about it.

If you got into Brown ED, but didn't get into RISD, are you OK with that?

Do you need financial aid? Brown is not need blind for international students, so if you need a lot of money, you might not get in no matter how good your stats are. And I know nothing about RISD's financial aid, and whether it gives 100% need.

Are you ready to work your ass off at RISD? For the dual-degree program, you go into RISD first for foundations year, and any RISD student would argue that foundations year is the toughest year. I'm a Brown student taking a RISD course and I put in 20 hours a week in studio for one course. I've made friends who are upperclassmen RISD students and they frequently reminisce about going into studio at 8am in the morning and not coming out of the building until it's dark outside (some reminisce Adderall-snorting-just-to-pull-all-nighters, among other pharmaceuticals).

Are you ready to commit to being a serious, full-time art student? Long hours in studio is what getting that RISD degree requires. RISD isn't just another fun art class.

I don't mean to scare you away from the program. If you feel that you are ready to handle being a Brown student AND a RISD student, then you should go ahead and apply. Your credentials seem reasonably solid for Brown, but I can't judge for RISD because your application there will ride on your portfolio.

Thankyou guys for your replies, first of all, fireandrain!
yeah only reason I'm applying to Brown Early Decision is because they offer classes in RISD, like Temeraire is doing. So I'm hoping for that kind of experience in Brown. and secondly, I don't think I'll be applying for financial aid. My parents decided to support me for FIVE years hahaha ah relieved.

And I am ready as hell! I experienced something like that over the summer in an art studio. Every day (except sunday) from 10~10 twelve hours a day. It was tiring as hell, but seriously I enjoyed every part of it. Thankyou for your input :D

know that you are applying to quite possibly the most competitive program in the country.
if you are okay with going to Brown without the dual degree, then ED will be fine
We can't tell you your chances.

My daughter is in the program. This is the inaugural year, and there are 13 students, 12 of which are female. Lemme know any specific questions you might have about the application process ... I remember it well! One suggestion I have is to read as much as you can on the schools' websites about what type of student they are looking for. Then decide if it describes you. If it does, apply with PASSION! "Plug yourself in" on paper so that you look like a good fit. By that I mean do some online research about specific opportunities at each school and elaborate on them in your application. These opportunities can be courses of study, community service activities, study abroad locations, etc. But it has to fit with the rest of your application. Think of every piece of the application as a piece of a puzzle and make it all look like it belongs together. Does this make sense?

Everything you hear about the rigors of the foundation year is true! My daughter is definitely putting in the long hours at RISD, which is where most of the action happens in the freshman year. In this program, a liberal arts class taken at one school counts at the other, and if you do well on AP exams, you can replace a lower level class with a higher level class. My daughter is not taking basic English at RISD. She's taking a class at Brown instead.

Good luck.

Dear Georgia4444. Now that your daughter has been in the RISD/Brown program for a year or so, how does she like it? What are her observations? Please report to us how it is working academically and socially. Does she miss her art making during the second year, when she is at Brown? Is the administration supportive? How stressful is it? Thank you for your insights.
