Brown student taking questions!

To go back to a topic at the beginning, we bought a laptop from the computer store. We were able to get a better price than buying from Dell directly and could assure that it had everything Brown requires for connecting to the system. Also, if anything goes wrong, my daughter can simply take it into the store and have it fixed. Having gone through a major hassle to get my son's computer fixed (which had not been purchased at his school), this seemed worthwhile.

She decided on a laptop because she didn't need anything more than that, it is much easier to transport, and it takes up less room.

Speaking of space, from what I've been able to tell from being there during last year's move-in and hearing from my daughter, many people bring way too much stuff and then have problems figuring out where it will go. For instance, we shipped two or three boxes and had to wait while the folks who had shipped 17 loaded their minivan, which was blocking access. I saw others with huge piles of stuff they were depositing in from of the dorm and I could only wonder what they were thinking...

TydaChic...I am a parent of an athlete, though not a recruited one. At Brown, she is on one varsity team, one club team and has participated in one intramural sport (she was a 3 varsity sport athlete in HS). Club teams are a great option because there are MANY skilled athletes who played a sport in HS who either can't make the varsity team or do not want to commit to the time required for a varsity sport, etc. So, those on the club level still tend to be experienced athletes but it just is not as intense in terms of a commitment or level. My D's club team traveled to games against other colleges, much like a varsity team does. However, they did not have a coach, like her varsity team does. The college provides some funds but they had to use their cars for travel. Then intramurals are another great option at Brown because it is even less of a commitment, more low key and there is no travel involved. So, there are many levels of skill and commitment available in sports at Brown and many experienced athletic students. As far as the availability of fitness facilities....no problem...there are gyms for any student to use. I recall last year when my D was a frosh, there was a gym connected to her dorm even.

Hope this helps some.

are there a lot tennis courts?
im gonna be playing alot of intramural tennis. i love that sport.

I'm pretty sure the answer to this will be pretty overwhelming (or at least I hope it will be hint hint) ... but what's the social life like at Brown?

i went to two classes on the ADOCH list and loved them (a neuroscience course and a russian language course). did i get a real impression of what classes will be like at Brown, or does Brown choose the classes on the list because they're so good?

Profs offer to have their classes on the list -- they're not chosen by Brown. There's definitely a mix of good and bad classes on the list.

are you required to purchase a meal plan, like at some colleges? And what is it like?
Is there a copy of all the classes available at Brown somewhere? e.g. their website?

idameyer:
go to http://boca.brown.edu

At Brown, you're required to be on some mealplan your freshman year (but you get to choose which one). After that, you have the choice whether to be on any mealplan, or none at all. I would explain more, but the mealplan will be changing a lot next year, and they haven't given us details yet.

what opportunities exist as far as creative writing is concerned?

wait! I found the literary arts section! Although if there is anything else, please mention it!

i second that.-- and also about the theater arts

what is the sat range of admitted kids ( i should know this, but i don't remember and i'm too lazy to check the website)

I had a question concerning financial aid for anyone that's currently attending Brown that read this thread. How substantial does the financial aid package change year to year? For example, some people negotiated with Brown by using financial aid packages from other comparable institutions and were able to receive a substantial amount of money. Will that money be gone in future financial aid pacakages?

Well, how substantial is the change of your financial status? That mostly of the time is the answer to that question.

I know this girl who got an extra 10k and another who got an extra 5k.

How is brown's engineering scene... is it chill?? I want to study engineering but I want the atmosphere of a LAC... lol

engineers seem to work harder than the average student because their courses demand it.. i have friends who are engineers and they say it is not competitive, but that doesn't mean the courses are easy. apparently a lot of people quit engineering after freshman year because EN3 and 4 are so hard and they realize they don't want to be engineers after all.

I would guess that open curriculum really helps for situations like that

How's Brown's Model UN team? Is it as good/almost as good as Yale's?
