Brown student taking questions!

what exactly is RISD. I hear about it here and there but I still don't know what it is.

I live in Providence so I know that a lot of kids from my school (Classical) will be applying. I was just curious if you have met or made any friends at Brown that didn't have that amazing 3.9+ GPA. Or is Brown really completely numbers driven in its application process? I think Brown and I would be a really good match, but my freshman GPA might be a problem. Besides that I saw you were all saying its hard to get permission to live off campus. I live in Providence though so how could they not let me live off campus if I was to be accepted which I don't think is very likely.

RISD

The Rhode Island School of Design (commonly abbreviated RISD and pronounced RIZ-dee) is one of the premier fine arts institutions in the United States. It was founded in 1877 and is located in Providence, Rhode Island at the base of College Hill and contiguous with the Brown University campus. The two institutions share social, academic, and community resources. They offer joint courses and students at each institution may cross-register in courses offered by the other institution.

RISD has been consistently named the best art college in the country by the US News and World Report and has the lowest admissions rate of all art schools in the United States (exept for the free Cooper Union).

RISD's mission statement is “to aid in the cultivation of the arts and design, and the general advancement of public art education and the application of the principles of art to the requirements of trade and manufacture.” The school includes about 350 faculty and curators, and 400 staff members. About 1,880 undergraduates and 370 graduate students enroll from all over the United States and 50 other countries from other parts of the world. It offers 16 undergraduate majors and 17 graduate majors. It also maintains over 80,000 works of art in the RISD Museum.

that's awesome, thanks a lot

I know some underclassmen who lived at home as it was within commuting distance. I've met many people who didn't have the 4.0 (and Thank God) what they did have was a spark though.

whats the nearest bank on or around campus?

I really like the whole open curriculum thing... its making me fall in love with brown but i dont want to get my hopes up.

Do you know anyone who is doing research at Brown? If so, do you know if they are enjoying it?

Nearest banks are Sovereign and Citizens.

Yup, lots of people are doing research at Brown, including freshmen! It's really easy to get involved with profs here, especially since there are so few grad students.

Also Bank of America is quite close and has more locations outside of PVD and is likely to be near you as well as to Brown.

I'm doing research this summer! It's in Portugal, but a brown program with a brown professor. My friend is doing lab work for the bio dept. Look into the UTRA program for some of the undergrad research you can do. There are many other opportunities outside of it though.

Wow that sounds pretty cool.... lol I didn't really think of brown as a very science oriented school, but it sounds like because it is so small, you really get some cool opportunities...

I know this is kind of a weird question, but I was kind of fazed by the crazy ranking rivalries/scandals in my h.s. this year and was wondering does Brown ranks their students with a traditional val., etc. at the end of their senior year?

We dont even calculate GPAs technically.

Nope, no valedictorian, no ranking, no GPA. Just Magna Cum Laude at graduation, which is something like top 20%.

Ahh..good.

On another note, what exactly is Spring Weekend? I was reading some Brown literature, and I also read the old Encyclopedia Brunoniana article on what it was like back then. It sounds fun..

It's basically a weekend full of concerts and parties, toward the end of April.

Would you say that Brown, compared to other Ivy's is more of the school for "real" kids, who are bright, but not a genious. Do you think this is reflected through the feel of the schoo.?
Thanks. I'm so glad to hear that you love you school. I love Brown too. Hopefully I'll be there in just another 3 years...

I dunno, I am continually amazed at how smart my fellow students are, like when one of my friends will just pop up with something completely random and amazing. The students are, in my opinion, the best part of this school.

runawaywithme -- I wouldn't put it like that at all. Brown kids are just as likely to be geniuses as at any other Ivy. However, the "feel" of the school is more laid back than at some other places, maybe because kids don't feel the need to show off their many talents and dazzling intellects constantly. As RaboKarabekian has already said, students here are absolutely amazing, and they definitely continue to blow me away as well. I have yet to meet someone who is "ordinary," but most of us are definitely "real."
