Brown Transfer 2012

My application status page has the “Decision: Click Here” button now. It leads to a page saying that decisions for transfer applicants are not available on the web, in a fancy business letter style. This button wasn’t there a week ago. 8l

Read previous post in the thread, your questions probably have been asked already. (yes, it’s a semi new thing that appeared; no, it doesn’t mean anything yet, just wait till may 15 and quit worrying excessively Nd over thinking it)

hey!

I’m applying to transfer from George Washington University!

Hello everyone!

I’m Alyssa. Freshman at Endicott College in Massachusetts. I don’t feel comfortable posting my stats right now but they are a bit below the stats I’ve seen posted here.
Brown is a huuuge reach for me so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. I also applied to five other schools for transfer (three of which are also major reaches):

 • Amherst (reach)
 • NYU (reach)
 • Wesleyan (reach)
 • Emerson (not as much of a reach)
 • Brandeis (not as much of a reach)

I haven’t heard back from anywhere yet and I’m dying to know.

Just to confirm what everyone else has said, I mailed a physical letter to Brown requesting early notice due to acceptance in to other schools. I also sent in a copy of a letter as proof. They emailed me back just saying they will not release early decisions.

Hey guys!
I’m applying to Brown as a transfer for the Fall/Spring of 2012 (No FA). I’m a Regents scholar, Bizecon major from UCLA… love the school but looking for a smaller, more intellectual environment and awesome people. Brown is my first choice but I also applied to Columbia (rejected last year), Northwestern, Duke (WL last year), and UChicago. College GPA is around a 3.9 (I have an extra quarter worth of classes because I took classes over the summer), SATs single sitting 2320 supascore 2350 (750 in math), Sat 2s 2280, pretty much a really great student in hs until second semester senior year— got straight B’s. My extracurics are tremendously better than last year— small but impressive business org, editor of a newspaper, regents society, internship, job, habitat for humanity stuff, arts camp counselor, other cool stuffff… overall pretty good. My recs were solid. I think my essays could have been written better, but they were really from the heart and I spent a lot of time developing them. I talked about how a professor and a visit to an art museum changed my perspective on life. My supplement could’ve been more specific but I was honest. I don’t know how much of a shot I have at B, but I’m worried I won’t get in anywhere. I didn’t apply freshman year. I know I’m probably not as qualified as other applicants but maybe not asking for FA will help? Anyone know if Northwestern is a reach for me?

Also— does anyone know how B sends out decisions? online or by mail? I want B to send my decision to my dorm address rather than my home address.

Booksandcats - Are you a freshmen or sophomore at UCLA?

@Portmanteau5 I’m a freshman atm but I have junior standing at ucla… which actually doesn’t really mean anything

Yeah if you’re a freshmen looking to sophomore transfer, your high school will be seriously taken into account as will your standardized test scores. One semester of college doesn’t mitigate 4 years of high school. Don’t kill the messenger!

@booksandcats our stats and interests are so similar it’s unreal. My scores (well, the ACT equivalent) are lower than yours, but our ECs, GPA, interests, hopes, and fears are all nearly identical. I’m hoping to major in art history at Brown, then get a master’s in museum studies. I also have a 3.9 GPA, a solid supplement (IMHO), and I’m not applying for aid. My biggest fear is also that I won’t get in anywhere but my state school. I was just denied to Cornell’s CAS, and I’m currently on the waitlist for Rhodes College. Still waiting to hear from William & Mary and Brown. I can’t get a clear answer from anyone, I guess because no one can really know but Brown’s admissions office, but I think the fact that we’re not applying for aid will definitely help us out. I’m not saying that anyone who doesn’t apply for aid can get in, but I think that not applying for aid will tip the scale in favor of already qualified applicants. Take a look at last year’s threads for transfers here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/1107864-official-brown-2011-transfer-thread.html</a> and here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/936056-brown-transfer-applicant-survey-fa-need-aware-admissions.html?highlight=need-aware</a>. From the survey, no one that didn’t apply for aid was denied admission, and I could only find two in the official results thread. So it seems like FA plays a big factor. As for your last question… Last year Brown sent decisions by mail only, but this year there’s a rumor that decisions will be posted online with acceptance packages to come later. Good luck to you! Hopefully we’ll both be in Providence this fall!

@portmanteau5 thanks I understand. I did a pretty good job in high school overall with a weighted GPA of 4.5 but not so great senior year. I do account for this however in my personal essay. Also… UCLA runs on the quarter system so they have two quarters of my grades plus one extra quarter of classes that I have take over the summer. I really do not know if B is in reach for me just because I did mess up a little bit at the end of high school.

@anthro4387 thanks for alll the info. Do knower anyone else know when they are planning to release decision? what state are you coming from?

Also just to add, my personal essay isn’t as lame as it sounds haha. I account for my grades by talking about how my summer experience changed my life and perspective on the world

Anthro, you got that kind of money laying around that you can drop on a BA? I think if you end up going to your state school you will have the money to spend on your grad degree. I always hear, "go cheap on the BA and splurge on the MA. right? by the looks of that thread you posted, you would have a better chance, but 100k in debt after 2 years seems pretty harsh for a BA. just MHO.

Oh, and just so you guys know, all decisions will be sent only through mail; admission decisions will not be posted online.

Edit: In regards to that that transfer applicant survey @anthro, it seems those that were accepted and did not apply for aid were qualified in other means as well. For instance, some applicants were waitlisted or accepted at equally and more challenging transfer schools like Yale or Stanford. It would seem that not applying for financial aid only tips the scale if you are qualified in the primary academic and personal factors.

Also consider the bias any survey conducted on CC would have. I imagine people would be far more likely to post about their acceptances than rejections.

@booksandcats I’m an Alabama applicant, so God only knows how that will affect me. I think that decisions will be mailed mid-May, but Frontium might be the better person to ask. Also, I’m not sure if decisions will be mailed to us on a day in mid-May or by mid-May. I really don’t know when to expect them. Last year it seems like they were mailed mid-May around May 15. Frontium, what can you tell us? Oh, and your essay doesn’t sound lame, booksandcats :)

@norcal I can definitely do half, and I’d be willing to take loans for the other $50,000 if I can’t get it covered. I have a scholarship to the University of Alabama, which is a great school, but, in my opinion, I’m a much better fit for Brown. It’s really too early for me to think like this anyway, since I haven’t been accepted to Brown and because I may not even be accepted. I shouldn’t get my hopes up haha.

@Frontium Good to know about our decisions. Did you call and ask? And yes, I absolutely agree with you on the weight/lack thereof given to an app by not applying for FA.

I e-mailed an administrative assistant at Brown and asked.

Frontium: do you know if we will be able to call for admissions decisions? It seems some people were able to last year.

Does anyone know when admissions decisions are being mailed? Sorry if this has been asked before.

Decisions will be mailed May 15
