I'm currently a junior who's researching about potential colleges I'll be applying to once December rolls around. I've come to admire Brown University for a number of reasons; in particular, I like how they give students the freedom to take any class from any 'major' that students wish. This leads me to wonder: What other universities share a similar philosophy with Brown University, regarding freedom in choosing classes?

Hi! I'm a junior too! What are you stats??

I think Vassar is kind of similar.

Grinnell and Amherst both have no requirements like Brown, but Brown is the only university I've heard of that uses the S/NC option. U of Rochester has very few requirements. As far as atmosphere goes, similar schools might be vassar or wesleyan.

calidan and RaboKarabekian: Thank for your input.

Sure! Anytime...

Good luck with your college search!

what's the s/nc option

It means satisfactory/no credit. Fancy way of saying "pass/fail." You can take any classes at brown S/NC instead of getting a letter grade. Plus, no fails will be noted on the transcript.

I think Wesleyan is similar in open ciric.

ohh i see thanks

But do people do it a lot (the pass/fail option), because I don't think grad schools or employers will have much respect for that right? Seems like an easy way out of doing hard work.

yeah, except most people only take a few unimportant classes pass/fail.
