^yes, it is. But you still need to be a viable candidate who writes an excellent application. A few years ago, a friend of mine who lives in RI showed me her son’s application to brown after he was denied. He was a NMSF and graduated first or second in his class (I think first because he spoke at his graduation). His sat2’s weren’t as high as his SAT’s & he wrote his essays quickly, & they could have been much better. He had the stats but was denied. He did win a full-tuition scholarship elsewhere & is very happy at his university & highly successful…top of his class, president of student body, amazing internships, free summer in Italy as part of his scholarship. In the end, it all worked out well, as I believe it does for many students. If you have the credentials for brown, you’re a student with significant abilities. You’ll do well no matter where you land as long as you put in the effort.
@justinn76 I absolutely wouldn’t call it a “hook.” Maybe it helps a little, but I can’t imagine it making a different for the vast majority of applicants.
I just read somewhere that Brown likes first gen students a lot. How much, though, if anyone could shed some light on the subject?
@DL43516 Brown does like first gen students, but it depends on what you mean by “a lot.” I recall reading that about 10% of Brown’s ED admits this year were first gen. I’m sure it helps, but just being first gen alone probably doesn’t hold too much weight. I can see it playing more of a role in helping applicants who have struggled or had to take on additional responsibilities as a result.
Hi everyone! I submitted my app a little while ago. Brown is a wicked long shot for me, but I thought I’d try. Good luck, everyone!
@12345n Congrats!!
@12345n I was accepted into Harvard but Im waiting to hear from Brown before I decide!
Does anyone else think there are a crazy number of applications being sent out this year? I just checked Naviance and apparently 7 people applied to Brown out of my class of 170, and we’re a public school. March can’t come soon enough!
@Qwerty568 How do you check the number of applicants from your school?
It’s through Naviance, a service your school has the option to buy! Yours might not have it.
@Qwerty568 I have Naviance, but I don’t know how to check the number of applicants from my school.
To check, I go to the colleges tab, search “Brown University”, and go to the school’s page. On the main page for the school, if you scroll down beneath the slideshow, there should be a small chart on the left titled “Application History”. If you look at class of 2015, under “Apply”, that’s the number of kids that are applying from your class.
@Qwerty568 Thanks so much. I don’t see it, which probably means that my school disabled it.
Try this…click on College Research and then click on Scattergrams and then choose a college from the drop down menu. It says how many apps from your school in that list as well. @Hawkace
@Hawkace That’s more than likely. My school was tempted to get rid of it entirely because of how it was negatively affecting the competitiveness between students. I’m sure it’s a problem that’s not unique to my school.
@lax1997 That worked, but it only shows the number of apps from the past 4 years. I just want to know how many applied during this year.
My school doesn’t allow us to see the number of applicants until the year is over…
@Hawkace Ahhhh. Mine is good for only this year since we just got Naviance this year. Sorry about that.
@lax1997 No worries. Thanks for trying.
@tkdgirl98 oh wow that is amazing! Congratulations! If you get in, will you pick Harvard or Brown?
