Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

Any International applicant here?

@ap012199 i went to the info session when I visited in March

@ala1001 oh cool. Is that when you decided to apply ED?

I’m not one. But is anyone uploading a visual arts supplement? I think I may do a photography one.

@ap012199 pretty much! I had a general sense of what the school was like before I visited, but after the info session and tour I knew that this is where I have to ED haha. Plus, it’s a long shot for me so I figured ED would be my best shot at any of these schools

Is anyone else submitting research abstracts? Brown only does it through Slideroom, but it’s saying you can only upload your abstract after you submit your application? Is that the same for everyone else?

Does anyone here have experience with Brown’s financial aid? I really want to apply ED but do not want to bind to something I might not be able to pay for.

Any info would be great! I’ve already gone through Brown’s website a lot.
Thanks!!!

@allima I would probably submit a research abstract. And yes, I also saw that you can upload it after submitting the application.

How do you guys think, if at all, admissions will be affected by the new Dean of Admissions Logan Powell?

@allima how long is your research abstract? I was thinking of submitting one…

Anyone thinking of concentrating in CS (if we get in)? I’m going to a CS dept. information day this saturday and it might be pretty cool.

@ala1001 I have two from two separate lab experiences, and I’m trying to send both. I have two separate abstracts that are about a paragraph each, but then I also have the template (which is basically on a powerpoint template) that I also want to send because it shows the full outline of everything & the results. You should totally submit one!

@sakibdurlob Brown admissions told me that you can only submit visual arts & music through SlideRoom, but for research abstracts, I have to submit it on the Application Summary Page after I apply and am given a Brown account

@njk345 nope. I took CS in junior year and enjoyed it, but I can’t spend my career coding on a computer screen. I’m thinking of going into either literary arts, architecture, or environmental science (plus Brown’s environmental studies building is really cool). Have you decided whether to ED or RD yet? I commented on your other thread.

@ap012199 Oh yeah, you did comment on my thread:) I’m still deciding, but I’ve almost finished the brown app just in case. I might just skip early altogether tho and go for a bigger selection regular (or try stanford rea for the heck of it and get ready for regular when i inevitably get rejected lol).

@njk345 cool. How do you feel about your supplements? IDK if mine are very specific/unique lol

Yeah idk, I’m just trying to shove as many of interests and ec’s into the questions as possible. Like I wrote my common app essay about playing trumpet, wrote a bunch about cs and engineering/robotics in the extra questions they ask for possible stem concentrators, touched on Latin/classics and music history (and other general modes of thought that interest me) in the first essay question, and then just wrote a bunch of general stuff about the open curriculum and interdiscinplinary study elsewhere. Like I’m sure most people’s answers r gonna b really similar here anyways cause the word limits are so small and there’s nothing too unique to be said…

Ive done kind of a similar thing- between the common app and my supplements, I’ve talked about my figure skating, research internship, volunteering, and family community. Do you think this makes me seem uncoheisve? I feel like my app is so random…

Do you guys happen to know if Brown wants us to write about where we lived in a factual way, or is this more like an essay where you can add some creativity and tell about your experiences a bit? (this is for the supplemental question about where we’ve lived and for how long)

Thanks!

@featherkin My counselor who used to work at Harvard admissions said that Harvard asked the same question, and she said they really just want to know where you have lived. According to her, it could be one sentence and be fine. I would predict that Brown’s admissions would be about the same, but definitely do what you feel is best.
