Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

Does anyone know why they extended the announcement date one week later than their usual date? Is it because they have many ED applications? Or is it because they lost a week after the election, with people on campus upset about the results? What do you think?

I think in the grand scheme of life, it does not matter. It is what it is. Decisions will be released, that’s the important point.

The announcement date on the admissions website is Wed. 12/14. The past few years the date was Thurs. 12/10/15, Thurs. 12/11/14, Thurs. 12/12/13 and Wed. 12/12/12.

What do I think? I think those dates are all about the same.

Interesting update on the issue of sending 1st quarter grades: My daughter sent emails last night to her school counselors asking that they be sent. She has communicated now with her admissions counselor at Brown who told her that yes, indeed, she was supposed to send the first quarter grades. So REALLY glad that you CC folks brought this up! Her first quarter grades are great and it is good to be able to send them, but even better to send them given that Brown admissions wants them!

I’m currently on break, and there’s no way my grades could be sent until next week. Is that going to hurt me? I never heard or read anything about first quarter grades so I’m kind of surprised at how important it seems to be…

I haven’t seen anything here or anyplace that makes me think it is so important for everybody. What has been said here is that some get asked for the grades. But it seems that some do not get asked and do not send them and it isn’t clear if it matters! My kid did not get asked, but requested them anyway and then was told that yes indeed, they were needed. There is no way to know if that was specific to her or more general. So no worries! My advice to my kids has always been: When in doubt, ask admissions!

I don’t even have first quarter grades to send…

@ap012199 I emailed my GC last week and she said that Brown hasn’t asked for first quarter grades and that there was nothing that indicated that they must be sent… I don’t want to send bc my physics grade was awful this quarter ugh

from what i know, if your school goes by quarters, then you send those grades. if your school goes by semesters, you won’t need to send in your grades (because there is no final report to send) unless brown asks for your mid-term grade for the first semester.

Since interview reports aren’t due until December 1, are no final decisions made before then?

ok what the hell? it doesn’t say anywhere on the application that you need to send in first quarter grades and I only know of this “requirement” through this thread. Do we actually need to send them in; will it work against us if we don’t?

Just received likely letter in the mail! Happy to say I’ll be spending four years in providence

@Monarch24 congrats! What sport were you recruited for?

@T26E4 Brown does issue Likely Letters to athletes as part of the ED process but a key point is that you have to actually apply before they give you a Likely Letter as they review the application in detail before issuing the letter. They will do a “pre-read” of your stats before a formal application but that is no guarantee. Given Brown is an ED school. that makes it a bit challenging for athletes who have to make a decision and turn down other offers before they actually know for sure on Brown.

@monarch24- congrats, my daughter just got her likely letter in the mail yesterday so will be joining you at Brown. A classmate of hers also got his yesterday too so it sounds like they are all going out similar time.

As someone mentioned in an earlier post, there is a new Admissions Director. The coach told my daughter that the LL review process was different this year as a result of this new person and that the process took a lot longer as a result.

In regards to sending in mid term grades, her school is a semester school and does not issue quarter grades. She was not required to submit a mid semester academic report.

So all 3 of these likely letter recipients are athletes? And two in one school? Wow! That’s cool.

Question: When checking the Brown applicant portal, there is a column for Received, then a separate column for Status. For my daughter, the Received column has all the checks. But for Status, there are only checks for the payment and the test scores. At the top of the page, it says that items are still being processed. So, what’s up with that? Does anyone have the Status column all filled in?

Brown, like most, if not all schools that use likely letters, only sends them to athletes in the ED/EA round. For everybody else, they just have to wait the 3 weeks for decisions.

You realize that the AO’s will also be taking the day off for Thanksgiving, right?

As I said upthread, if they want an update on grades, they will ask. If they required it from everybody, you should correctly assume that it would be listed on the website. If a HS does not have mid-semester grades available, then they are not available. However, that does not prevent to AO from asking the GC for an off-the-record, informal update, if needed.

@profdad2021 the two I am aware of are both athletes, both same school but different sports. The other person is likely an athlete as well as I think Brown only does ED likely letters for athletes. In terms of your question on the portal. My daughter also only has the status column filled in for payment and test scores.

Okay ye experts - what to do, what to do?. I want my daughter to send an email to her admissions counselor to confirm that ALL of her materials ARE in her application file because her situation does not fit that structure shown on the applicant portal. Specifically, she has two schools, not one, so she has two separate transcripts and two separate 1st quarter grade reports. And, she submitted the ACT and also submitted SAT Subject test scores. The applicant portal is set up in such a way that it isn’t possible to tell that they have all that information.

For you who have been through this before: here is your chance to weigh in! She is reluctant to send another email because she just emailed on Monday to ask about the 1st quarter grade report. I am telling her - better safe than sorry - need to confirm that they have the separate documents in her file and it is OK to email again.

I told her that once an item is marked received, then they are not on the lookout for another item that fulfills the same criteria. That increases the chances that something could be missed.

Thoughts?
