@ithinkuracontra i plan on concentrating in neuroscience & being on the premed track! and yeah @Seirien i’m pretty sure i’m going!
@allima I’m debating if I want to go I love Brown a lot, but I’m just not hopeful at all in getting in and may need to visit more schools but idk ! Do you think I should go?
@Seirien go if you want! i mean if you live close why not? im only going because i’m EDing there haha
anyone applying early action to other schools?
@allima Probably a good idea and yeah, I live close and also applying ED haha. Does Brown allow you to apply EA to other schools if you do ED? Just curious.
@allima @Seirein Yes, Brown’s ED guidelines allow applicants to apply to other non-binding/non single choice schools EA. I’m thinking Northeastern.
Another question… Do you guys think that the stats for ED applicants are the same for RD applicants? I know the the average accepted GPA and test scores for ED applicants is a little lower than for RD applicants. However, this is partially due to recruited athletes and legacies.
@ap012199 I would think/hope so. Colleges, especially selective ones, want students that genuinely would love to attend the college for what it is, not for prestige. So I would guess applying ED shows you are more committed and truly love the college, which may also account for the lower stat rates. But also, from what I calculated of the 22% that got accepted last year, 7% or so were recruited athletes. So, that means only 15% - which is equal to the denied % -were accepted and that doesn’t include kids in the special programs or with very strong hooks so, it’s tough to tell.
So for us, maybe the ED stats (from Class of 2020) might as well be:
-15% denied
-10-15% accepted
-63% deferred
Does anyone know how many deferred applicants were accepted during the regular app pool?
@Seirien about 7% I believe. I did the math and took out the athletes from the ED pool (assuming 100% acceptance rate) and found that about 17% of the 22% were admitted without recruited athlete status. I’m going to a Brown info session this month to meet my rep so hopefully I can network and make a good impression! Haha
I’m thinking about applying ED this fall to Brown! I have a good GPA and tests scores (4.0 and 34) and a lot of leadership positions and activism in my school. I’m just worried that the financial aid won’t be enough because, when I calculated the estimated aid on college board, the estimated aid from Brown was significantly less than all the other schools I’m looking at
@mon1188 if that’s the case, I would advise you to not apply to Brown ED so that you can compare packages from other colleges.
@ap012199 yeah I was thinking that too at first. The expected parent contribution is still manageable for my family, I just found it disappointing that the aid is so much less than at other Ivys and similar schools.
I’m going to meet my regional rep this month and hopefully do some networking… Do you guys have any tips to make my encounter with her memorable?
I really really want to get into Brown ED!! But unfortuneately my gpa is pretty low (weighted 4.24). But I also go to a magnet school that doesn’t release our rankings to colleges - we dont even know our rankings! I took both the ACT (32) and the SAT (2270), but I don’t know which one to turn in, not to mention that I havent taken my subject tests yet. I’m also really involved at school, being the captain of the dance team and the Vice President of a volunteering club while also being in youth and government mock trial, model UN, NHS, and more. Do you think I have a chance with my low gpa?
@rainbowpop I go to a charter school w/o rankings and have a 32 also. The good thing about submitting an ACT to Brown is that they won’t ask for SAT IIs in that case. Your GPA is not low… I would say apply ED if you want!
Any idea of how important SAT Subject tests are? I got a 650 and 660 on literature and math II, so I’m not really sure if those are good enough.
@wheatgerm If you took the ACT, Brown doesn’t require subject tests. However, if you took the SAT, the subject tests are required.
Those scores aren’t bad, but they’re on the low side for Brown. However, I wouldn’t worry too much about it since they rarely ever make or break an application.
I’m trying to decide whether I want to apply ED to Brown and I love pretty much everything that I’ve heard about it (the open curriculum, the attitude of the teachers, how “laid back” the students can be) except for maybe the super liberal reputation it has (I’m a Christian and I love my religion and it’s a huge part of my life but as long as I’m not going to get like consistently slammed for my faith it’s all good), but I don’t know if my indecision is just due to the fact that I’m an indecisive person or if it’s indicative of a reason that I shouldn’t go to Brown, so I was wondering if I could get some thoughts as to what made you guys choose to ED to Brown (v. other schools like Amherst or Vanderbilt or other Ivies and such) and how you knew when you were certain (I keep being wishy washy about it…)
@justdoinglife our family had very similar concerns. Here’s my take for what it’s worth. When we visited the campus the first time our tour guide was a very fun and energetic girl from Georgia who was wearing a Jesus necklace, she was doing very cool edgy social science research on graffiti. She was obviously well liked by the folks at Brown (fellow students as well as administration) and was very involved also in music. I was very direct about inquiring about her faith experience at Brown. She was very happy with overall experience including her faith. She was connected to a church in Providence and seemed to have found her place at Brown. Coincidentally she was also the student that participated in the info session that day.
My belief is that Brown is SUCH a place of wonderful tolerance, that every person can feel welcomed and appreciated.
I just submitted my ED application yesterday. Do you know if Brown sends a confirmation email when they have received your application?
