Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

For anyone who took the ACT… How’d you guys do?

@ap012199 uh. Terrible :(( . I already signed up for October already. Let’s just hope I can do better on my final try.

was anyone else at brown bearings?

@Seirien disappointing to hear. Good luck in October! Luckily, I now have a 34 SS (which Brown will see) so I won’t have to take it again!!

@allima I was there!

I only have a 32 act with a 33 superscore (although ik they dont superscore). English-35 Math-32 Reading-34 Science- 30. Ik my scores are weak but I take the most rigorous course load possible and get all A’s. Do I even have a chance or am I wasting my time applying ED.

@mnx9xx although Brown doesn’t super score, if you submit multiple tests they note the highest sub sections across all test dates. So even if they don’t exactly super score, they can find out what your super score is. 32 is the average ACT score for Brown. If it’s your first choice, apply ED. Just make sure the rest of your app is stellar.

Anyone else having trouble with fitting everything into the supplements?

^^Me big time. I’m also having a hard time with the activities section on the Common App. 150 characters is so limiting!

Same. The community one and how that impacted me is killing me; it’s only 100 words. :frowning:

Also, could anyone give me some advice for the “where have you lived” prompt? I’ve only lived in one boring, small suburb my whole life with nothing really interesting at all. I don’t know what to write for it at all. Any tips?

@Seirien since that’s the case, I would talk about how your community has shaped your values and interests and how that could be applied to Brown’s campus

@marchingahead, last year they accepted four students from my daughter’s school and three matriculated. There are no quotas per school from what we experienced. We feared that issue when my daughter and one of her best friends since they were three years old, both applied ED. They were both of the four accepted. Ultimately two were ED and the other two were RD. Hope that helps.

@rainbowpop, weighted gpa’s are less important than the unweighted. Schools will “re-weight” them, and frankly it’s not just about the numbers and more about you taking the most rigorous courses available and how you did in them. Some schools have a multitude of AP and quite a few have none. They are viewed against the school’s curriculum, not absolutes. Regarding your SAT, if that 2270 is non-superscored, that’s extremely good. Even superscored it’s something to be proud of.

I met my reader today. It went well, but we only had about a minute of conversation because we had to vacate the building :frowning:

This is a very nebulous question that doesn’t have an exact answer, but if I get denied/deferred, it won’t be because of my GPA (4.0 UW) or test scores (34 ACT ss), right?

@ap012199 It probably won’t be because of those two factors that you will get denied.A 32 composite and 34 SS on the ACT is already really good, and your UW Gpa seems to be perfect as well, especially if you took progressively more challenging courses. They defer most of their applicant pool anyways, so I wouldn’t think the academic portion is what separates most people; it’s probably their essays and rec letters (the portion that shows who you are) I’m pretty sure.

I personally won’t be extremely -hopefully just slightly - upset if I get deferred; at least they are still considering you right? I probably would be stressed until Ivy day though. If I get denied though, I would probably be devastated and that would probably ruin my winter break (like why must the decision be so close to Christmas :frowning: ) & the rest of my senior year but you know… can’t do anything about it, so I TRY -but still fail- not to stress and worry about it.

Does anyone have any insight into regional admissions officers coming to your school? I found out a few days ago that my regional rep was coming to my school. Brown has never come since my school is pretty small, and not many people have applied in the past. (Like 5 people have applied according to our records, no ED’ers either). We basically don’t seem to have a relationship with Brown. So anyways, I was so shocked that they were coming. I spoke to my counselor, thinking she was trying to help me out or something, but she told me that Brown reached out to her and asked to come. (like what???) Is that a normal thing to happen?? I am the only student interested and applying to Brown from my class… so it’s not like there’s a lot of apparent interest. Any thoughts?

@ithinkuracontra in what state do you live? That may have something to do with it along with the general reputation of your school.

Hello all–
I applied to Brown ED last week. I have a 4.62 GPA with the hardest APs (Euro 5, Bio 5, English Lang 5, Spanish Lang 5, Physics 1 4, APUSH 4), 34 combined ACT (35 Super Score), and 750 Biology M and 800 Math II for subject tests. I’m also a National Merit Semifinalist and have a bunch of extracurriculars, including varsity field hockey captain, debate team captain, peer tutor, band, Scholar’s Bowl team, etc. However, I’m a white girl from Tennessee in the upper middle class so I don’t really fit the general Brown student profile. Do you guys think I have a good chance of acceptance?

@catherine1219 Bottom line is that you aren’t going to get rejected for your academic stats. It’ll come down to your essays, letters of rec, and true passion about Brown. I think you stand a good chance. Did you send both ACTs to Brown for the 35 super score?
