Yes @ap012199 , I sent them both. I know my counselor rec and one of my teacher recs will be stellar, and the other teacher rec will still be very good. I’ve got a bunch of accolades too but I feel like Brown doesn’t really care. My common app essay is about how I started doing origami when I was really little and how it shaped me into a kinder person (I know it sounds cheesy but it’s not too bad). One of my supplements is about how I live in a semi-liberal town within the deeply conservative South so I think that might help, but I’m just worried because only one person out of twenty-five from my school has been accepted in 8 years. I don’t know if anyone else has applied ED, but I just don’t know if I’m what they’re looking for.
Hi @catherine1219, I think the qualities you worry about the most are exactly what make you distinctively unique! I think you’ve got a great shot, and ed helps!! Best of luck.
Does anyone know if you can take the October ACT and still apply early? I think I just have to send the scores directly to Brown but I’m not 100%
@lolcollege18 I believe so. But just a tip: don’t waste your time retaking if you have a 33+. What did you receive on your ACT? Have you even taken it yet?
anyone else having trouble uploading things onto SlideRoom?
Hi everyone, I’m new to the thread and I am 100% applying to Brown ED! It’s definitely a long shot for me, my GPA is weak (93 UW, 100 W) but I will be graduating with 12 AP classes I have a 33 on the ACT and am taking it again in October, currently have a 710 on Chem and 740 on M2 but I retook those along with US in October. I have a lot of ECs (student government freshman year, print and copy editor of newspaper, vice president of film society, president of global awareness club, captain of congressional debate, peer drug leader, National Honors Society, World Language Honors Society, community service (150+ hours), I used to intern at our village hall and I did research in a Chem lab at NYU this summer through NYUGSTEM) and I’m feel good about my recs but I’m also Indian. Do you guys know how holistic of a process it really is or how much affirmative action plays a roll? sorry for the long post im super nervous lol
@ala1001 unfortunately but truthfully, it will be harder for you to get in due to your race. However, Brown’s admissions process is truly holistic. I wouldn’t worry about retaking the ACT because if you get deferred with that score, it won’t be the reason you don’t get accepted. Also, it appears that you don’t have any long term ECs outside of school. Since Brown is really holistic, that will probably be the biggest detriment to your app. Honestly, once you have the numbers and good essays, it’s a game of chance. Good luck!
@ap012199 yeah that makes sense. Outside of school my main ECs are community service since freshman year at my local mosque and interning at our village hall
@ala1001 you’re not an international applicant, are you? Where are you from?
@ap012199 No, I’m from Long Island, NY. My school is a very competitive public school (Roslyn High School) and we tend to do very well with Cornell, UPenn, Columbia, Northwestern, WUSTL, and Duke, but Brown isn’t very popular with Roslyn kids…
My advisor has thrown ED at me once or twice, but I’m not sure if I want to commit to it. Would I even be competitive? 3.8 GPA, 31 ACT (32 if super-scored), 1350 SAT. Waiting on subject test scores. But I also have a wide range of ECs like varsity sports, club sports, theater, 400+ hours of community service, and work experience.
@ezlbio Brown looks at highest sub-scores if you send multiple ACT tests, so that’s a plus for you. If your ECs are good, I’d say you’re competitive. Brown factors in much more than test scores and GPA, so keep that in mind. Good luck!
35-27-36-29 = 32. I’ve seen people with insane scores questioning their chances. I seem to be on the lower end. I’ve been on my school’s varsity swim team (9-12); We’re the defending city champions if that’s any help. I’ve been apart of a USA Swimming team since 2012. That’s essentially 20+ hours of swimming per week. I’ve also coached elementary school swim teams, and I’m a lifeguard. I’ve also been a part of my school’s soccer program. I’ve worked in summer camps. I’ve volunteered at special needs elementary schools (I want to study neuroscience and look into secondary education), and cared for children with muscular dystrophies, down’s syndrome, intellectual disabilities, paralysis, and autism (both verbal and non-verbal). I’ve preformed in professional shows and been a part of my dance studio for over a decade. I’ve also served as a tutor, and worked to provide for veterans and poverty-stricken local residents. I’ve also been affected by Hurricane Sandy so I’ve worked within my community (NYC) to provide relief whenever I’ve had the opportunity to. I’ve lost two houses and moved 5 times within the past 4 years. I’ve played the sports, done the service, spent my time in the theater, taken the AP classes, and enjoyed all of it. Not sure if this means anything to anyone, but I also skipped a grade in elementary school. It’s painfully obvious as soon as you look at my DOB.
@ezlbio if you feel like you fit into Brown and finances aren’t of immediate worry, I think you should go for it!
Oh and p.s.: the high stats on this website are from worried, overachieving high schoolers who, in no way, are a representation of all applicants.
Oh my gosh, people from ethnic minorities with a 1500 SAT and 750-800 SAT II’s with awards for cancer research… freaking out. That astonishes me. I’m 16. I can’t even drive a car. If I do apply ED with my current scores, send both ACTs? Quite frankly, I’m just slightly anxious about putting myself out there and then being told that I’m laughable for even trying. One of my close friends is currently a junior at Brown and he has told me not to worry about scores. He’s been confident throughout this whole process and I want to believe that he’s right to be, but it’s difficult to be confident, especially when looking at the numbers.
@ezlbio if it makes you feel any better, I’m equally ask freaked out. I’m on the lower end of GPAs and I have no awards for research… But I love brown and I’m applying ED anyways
@ezlbio Just from considering my stats and qualifications, I already feel like complete utter trash to legitimately everyone on the post by now, but I’m still applying ED and just hoping for the best. I just know that if I didn’t apply ED, I would regret it.
@ezlbio I truly believe that Brown will accept you for you, not your numbers. Schools like Brown don’t even have to bother with numbers because once you reach a certain threshold score wise/number wise, they look beyond and try to distinguish the numbers into a person. The people who are best able to convey their humanity and uniqueness are the ones they are going to accept. Plus, a 32 is average at Brown. Your score fits right in amongst others. And your high 35 and 36 subscores display an academic strength area. Don’t worry about your scores
And hey, no one should be laughed at for trying. You try and you don’t succeed? Who’s to say you are in the wrong? You put yourself out there. Confidence is key!! You can do it!!
I totally agree with @ithinkuracontra
