Brown University class of 2021 ED applicants discussion

@ithinkuracontra Thank you so much for such a kind, reassuring response. Yes, I’ve always been a very strong writer and had an aptitude for English. My interests, however, lie more within science and government, specifically biology, chemistry, psychology, and criminal justice. As many have said, I enjoy the dark and disturbed. With that being said, being capable of writing, and writing well, has never hurt anyone.

It’s just the fact that being rejected or waitlisted by your top school is pretty crushing. I’ve seen it before and I’m sure I’ll see it again. I have plenty of other viable options, but being at Brown would make me ecstatic.

I’m sure I would have a better chance if I applied ED, but I’m not sure if I want to make that commitment.

@ezlbio I honestly feel the same way. I have been in love with Brown forever and I have a ton of ECs but I haven’t had any scientific breakthroughs and my GPA and ACT scores are on the lower end for Brown. At this point, there’s nothing to do but try. You never know what’s gonna happen! At the same time though, if commitment is an issue then RD may be a safer option because you don’t want to strap yourself in if you aren’t 100% sure ya feel

@ala1001 I don’t know what you’re talking about when you say that your ACT is low for Brown… it’s above the 50th percentile.

@ezlbio just saying, you don’t have to start “freaking out” because ethnic minorities have achieved success in high school. tbh, though affirmative action is practiced, it definitely does not make or break a non-ethnic minority’s chance in being admitted. just look at the stats, there are only about 6% of african americans (and sometimes even less for other minority groups) who attend Brown and its counterpart schools. So I wouldn’t get so worried about race, just put your all in your application. I’ve seen it first hand. I’m a minority, and my brother, with great stats and success throughout high school, has been rejected at some schools where his other friends who aren’t minorities have been accepted because they really made their application glow and have also seen success throughout high school. so I wouldn’t so hung up on that

@ap012199 relatively speaking a 33 is quite low. The stats include ACT scores of legacy students and recruited athletes, which are not always the highest. A 33 isn’t bad but it isn’t great either. Taking into account my own GPA, which is definitely on the lower side for Brown, I don’t feel to good about my scores. Also, I’m Asian so I’m held at a different standard when it comes to admissions unfortunately

Random question… so I found out my rank about a week ago. My school doesn’t officially rank so my rank wouldn’t be on my report from my guidance counselor, but my history teacher told me that I was ranked #1 in the senior class (he has access to our records bc he’s in charge of CSF). Now I know nothing about it would be mentioned by my GC, but could I still put it in the Common App? Or is that unethical?

No, if your school doesn’t officially rank, you shouldn’t put it in the Common App.

On some other threads I saw that some schools’ computer systems filter out low scores and only show highest scores for a super score for the SAT. Do u think Brown does that for the ACT too (Ik they don’t ss but only consider highest sub-scores if multiple tests are submitted). Or does the way the ACT scores are reported make it impossible to filter out the lower scores and only show highest sub scores?

@ap012199 the admissions officer at the info session said that they super score it themselves in the sense that while they see your low sub score, they don’t actually consider it if they see you have a higher sub score

@ala1001 oh no way! So if I have a 34 super score that’s what’ll be considered?

@ap012199 yeah! But they’ll still see your composites of each test that you submit in order to allow them to superscore it

@ala1001 ah ok. I’m totally cool with that.

Hey everyone! Anybody else thinking of playing a varsity sport at Brown?

Hey Guys!
I’m thinking of applying ED too! The cost is a big problem for me though, so I’m not sure.
Anyways, does anybody here have any information on Brown’s art program? Is it as competitive as an art school?
Also, do my scores give me any chance of passing “the 1st phase”? I have a 3.64 unweighted GPA, a 30 on the ACT, a 1370 on the new SAT, a 1960 on the old SAT, and 2 subject tests below 700. I have 2 consistent EC’s and volunteering is not at one consistent place but has a theme. I feel like Brown’s personality matches my weirdness a lot and is the only reach school I am applying too.
Do I have any chance of getting in based on my scores alone? What is Brown really like, if anyone knows? I can’t visit the campus. Does anyone have experience with the financial aid? I’ve read up on their website but would like a first-person accoount.
Thanks so much to anyone who answers! Good Luck with ED everyone!!!

@452asdfgh maybe a club sport, but I’m not a recruited athlete.

@ala1001 when were you told about the super scoring policy?

Hello! Another prospective ED applicant here. I saw that Brown has a ‘résumé’ submission option in the Activities Section of Commonapp. Does anyone here plan to submit it?

@sakibdurlob I am going to submit an acting resume because I don’t mention any of my roles in the activities section.

hi guys! I’m thinking of applying ED too  Just wondering, does anyone know the procedure for interviews? How/when do we schedule them?
