My S is a junior at Brown. We compared financial aid packages from Swarthmore, Wash U, and Pomona with Brown’s, and sad to say, Brown’s was the least generous. The primary difference was in the amount of loan he is expected to take out over four year: he will have to borrow approximately 24,000 while that figure would have been approximately 16,000 at Pomona and Swarthmore. I am not sure what he would have dealt with at Wash U, but I suspect it would have been less. The amount of loan does vary at Brown according to the family income.

Brown has been a wonderful place for my son, and I have no regrets about spending the extra money. We anticipate trying to help him with his loans when he graduates, especially since he is unlikely to be employed in some lucrative field.

Brown is being very generous with us. It is true that Brown’s finaid might be a bit lower than some of the other top schools, but the folks at the office are really lovely and perhaps would be willing to help if a problem arose. Daughter received two scholarships: The larger one is the normal financial aid, and the second one is the one-time only Work Scholarship to replace the Work/Study requirement that she will do in subsequent years. To me, that is a really valuable part of the package, and speaks to the school’s understanding of the potential difficulties in the first year.

My D is a third year at Brown. I agree that the staff of the financial aid office are among the most delightful I have encountered. The first year Brown reviewed and revised its financial aid package when presented with another more generous package from another Ivy. I have found them willing to listen and to careful review all extenuating circumstances.

I agree completely with the statements from franglish and 2collegemom about the openness and concern of the Brown fin aid office personnel. We have had to submit medical documentation showing costs over the last three years, which has lowered our EFC significantly.
