Brown University for Engineering?

I was recently contacted by Brown University because I am interested in math/science/technology. They invited me to visit their campus.

I looked into Browns engineering program and they offer the major I want (computer engineering). However, I am not so sure if it would be the best option. Any advice or input on whether brown would be a good choice?

What other attributes are you looking for in a school? You also need to consider your cost constraints and admission credentials to see if it is a realistic school in terms of admission and affordability for you.

Note that Brown has humanities and social studies requirements for students in its ABET accredited engineering majors, so the “open curriculum” of no breadth requirements does not apply to those majors.

Brown University is a great choice. I believe it’s the 31st best overall engineering school in the world. If not it’s around there. Certainly everything depends on what you’re aiming for… Location? Prestige? Overall ranking? Networking?

If you want to be at the top dog engineering school there’s always MIT.

First, let me point out that Brown has VERY selective admissions. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that just because they contacted you that it means that your odds for admission are good. Lots of very selective colleges make a lot of effort to get the largest number of applications, which depending on how cynical you are, can be either to decrease their acceptance rate and hence rank higher in the rankings, or to reach well-qualified students who wouldn’t have thought to apply there.

Brown publishes a lot of detailed admissions info. Notice how low the acceptance rate is even for exceptionally well-qualified applicants.

Brown is less well known for engineering than many other very selective schools. I didn’t even realized they offered engineering until recently. I’ve since learned that it is a very good program though.

Without knowing more about what you are looking for in a school and what your stats are, I don’t know if Brown would be a good choice, or even a realistic school to apply to.

Yes, thank you. Brown does offer the majority of what i am i looking for in a school, so all is well there. I was just curious to see if someone who majored in engineering had an opinion on whether this school would be worth applying to compared to others.

MIT is definitely on my list! Their mission describes my life purpose perfectly. :)

Although I am considering applying. I don’t believe that solely because Brown contacted me my chance of being admitted are any higher.

Also, I never asked if it would be a realistic school for me to apply to. And while I do feel confident in myself and what I have achieved academically and on my own, I am not comfortable with sharing that information on the Internet for everyone to see.

Thank you for expressing your concern.
