Brown University!

so my dream school is pretty much Brown. It would mean so much if I could go but I don’t know what my chances really are. I am a sophomore at the moment and I am hoping to do anything in my power so that I get accepted. I am in 8 different clubs/ organizations, take all honor/ AP classes possible, have a 4.3 gpa (out of 4) and I am pretty okay when it comes to my volunteer hours and community participation. I will take classes at a community college during summer, junior year, and senior year. However, standardized tests and I aren’t exactly the most acquainted, and upon taking the psat for the first time, I received a 166. I have taken another practice test after receiving that score and received about a 1950. So how okayish do you think my chances are?

It’s sophomore year, no one can tell you. Just try to raise your GPA as much as possible, buy or borrow a few test prep books from the library if you feel you need to, and keep working hard.

You have a 4.3 out of 4…?

You should do a lot of SAT/ACT prep. I mean you have more than a year and a half and if you find a good tutor you can easily get 2200+ or 33+ (anyone can).

Also, it’s not really about how many random activities you do, but how deeply involved in them you are. It would look much better to be president in 2 clubs than member in 8 clubs. Speaking of which, leadership is always good - if you’re popular and not shy, definitely run for class treasurer/secretary/president/something.

I don’t really know much about how summer classes are perceived but I don’t think it’s regarded as anything much. Maybe, instead of taking classes, find a lab or professor and do some kind of research over the next year or two and get it published or submit to a competition like Siemens or Intel. Do something groundbreaking, win one of those, and it’ll guarantee you a spot at Brown.

As a Sophomore you are terrific shape. Brown is a top tier school, though. Your achievements are exemplary thus far, but make sure you keep pushing yourself. Also, make sure you try your hardest to hold a form of leadership in a club! Chance me!

Also, you can see how well your test scores match up on College Board. It’s a pretty great tool!

Could you possibly recommend any kind of summer opportunities or summer programs? and I will possibly follow through with trying to do a big project thing, but I am required to take the summer college classes  and of my groups, two are Spanish orientated, which I am deeeeeply involved in and loving very much. I appreciate the help very much!!

I think your chances right now are pretty good. Keep up the good work!

Chance me!

Don’t worry about taking Spanish classes just because some people think it’s not impressive - even if it’s not the most impressive thing in the world you’re still benefiting from it and if you love it that’s even better.

For summer opportunities it depends what you’re interested in. If you love Spanish maybe it’s something with that, like a language camp or tutoring opportunity. If you’re interested in another field or want to explore it, try something with that. Just spend a little bit of time googling/searching for different opportunities/programs for high schoolers, it’s not that boring and definitely worth it.

I was thinking of actually doing the leadership academy at brown university next summer, this summer is not quite possible for me to do that but I hopefully can put in a lot of volunteer hours. And maybe doing a summer camp at brown could earn me some “brownie points”

Sounds like a good idea, good luck
