Brown University

Anyone going to Brown this summer?

I'm taking an anthropology course:
Globalization and Society in the 21st Century.
Session 2E (June 25 - July 8)

I got into a class on Classical Literature, but opted for a diff program instead =/ I heard good things about it, though.

I took a Brown summer class last summer and LOVED it. Its when I knew I wanted to go to Brown.

I had the summer of my life at brown! I did a mini-course and absolutely loveeed it! Brown was amaaazzing. When I came back I was obsessed with going there. I met uncountable numbers of great people, a lot i'm still in touch with. The dorms are nothing special but they provide you with a bed, desk, and place to hang out. There are a lot of single rooms, doubles, and some are set up as suites with three single rooms around a common living room. For profs...it depends what class you are taking and who you get but in general you won't end up with someone actually bad, although I can't say the prof i had was inspiring. It gives you a great look at college life though, and you get to meet people from all over the world! I can't recommend this program with more enthusiasm. GO TO BROWN!what could be better? the only bad thing is when you eventually have to leave and say goodbye...

Yeah, it really was amazing. I met so many kids from all around the world... My best friend was a native Korean, one of the coolest kids I've ever met! It really does give you a taste of college life. I highly recommend it as well. =)

ouch, please don't bump old threads. I was reading the people who "got in" already and started freaking out because I thought the deadline for Brown had already passed.

someone on a different thread said brown's pre-college program is really lax on rules and regulations - did you find that to be true?

Haha, yeah, Summer@Brown was awesome, the rules aren't imposed too much.. At least they weren't in my quad. Two girls from my anthropology class hung out w/ Lebanese guys from my floor in the lounge until the whee hours of the night (you're not supposed to leave your respective floor past 12)... I think one time they even fell asleep in the boy's lounge on my floor and woke up late, thus arriving late to class and being called sluts by the others in my class, haha... Good times.

I really want to go to Summer@Brown, but I have a few questions for anyone who has previously gone! =D

Were the professors mainly real Brown professors (or just working there over the summer)? I really want to experience college life for a few weeks, but I'd love to interact with actual professors from Brown.

Has anyone taken any of the math mini-courses? I absolutely love math, and I'm considering the Number Theory class; does anyone have any feedback about this class? Also, my concern about this class is that it will cover material I'm learning in high school (I'm a junior, in honors math right now, and will be taking AP Calc BC next year). I know it would be hard to say without actually knowing my high school, but if you've taken it, did you find that it was math you wouldn't normally study in high school?

And the silly question... I requested a brochure online a week/week and a half ago, and still nothing... I know it hasn't been very long, but I read on an earlier thread that someone waited months for the brochure from Brown and it never came. Does anyone know how long it's supposed to take? My mom is waiting on the brochure before seriously talking to me about applying, but I'm afraid classes will fill up if I wait much longer, and the program sounds like a ton of fun!

1- My professor was going for his PhD at Brown, so I think he was like, a part-time teacher if I remember correctly.

2- Didn't take a math course, sorry.

3- I think mine took a few weeks. It should probably come shortly. There might be a number you can call if you want.

I definitely recommend the program. It's fun having a lot of liberty, cause the RAs are really nice and very cool people who know one of the reasons you came was to have fun. Brown also organizes a lot of really nice seminars and events for every night, so whether you wanna go to an intriguing lecture or play poker or explore Thayer Street, there's always something to do. The campus itself is beautiful too (although definitely hilly, haha).

They sent me a brochure within a week of my request.

My son just got his brochure and he has already been accepted. He applied before getting the brochure because he needed financial aid.

I'm taking the four-week Intro to Arabic, and am quite ecstatic.

How is the financial aid for the Brown summer program?

my understanding is that the FA for the Brown program is good (if you need it -- you have to have the paperwork) but it is first come, first served. My son applied in late December and got a great FA award.

Hmm, I looked at it and it seemed a tad overpriced, especially because you weren't getting any college credit. But the mini-course topic did seem amazing...maybe I'll take another look.

If you do the 7 week program, you do get college credit and you take regular brown courses with undergraduate students. they had a tons of choices -- shorter term non-credit courses and the 7-week college credits classes.

Anyone participating in the Language and Culture program?

I know. I applied for a mini-course brochuer late December, and I still haven't gotten the brochure. Should I call or request another one?

Thanks for all the great feedback! I really appreciate it1 ^_^

A few more questions... there were 4 courses I was interested in (Number Theory, History of Astronomy and Mathematics, Birthplace of Western Tradition: Greece and Rome, and Genetics and Human Behavior) BUT they're all during the July 15-August 3 sessions, and my family already has vacation planned during that time... I'm very frustrated by this! I was hoping to find similar courses (math, genetics, ancient history) during sessions beginning June 24, July 1, or July 8... does anyone know of any that are generally about the same topics? I looked through the course catalog online (multiple times) and couldn't find any extremely simliar (there was one math course, but it was a pre-calc course and I'm already doing that in high school).

That said, I did find a few other courses, and was wondering if anyone had taken them/had any feedback on them:

Ancient Tragedy and its Influence

Intro. to Game Theory

Intro. to Macroeconomics

Intro. to Egyptian Hieroglyphics.

Any feedback would be very much appreciated! I'm very grateful for all the responses I've already gotten. :)
