Brown V. Carleton

Was anybody accepted into Brown as well?

These are my top 2 schools, but it's basically 50/50, and I don't know which one to choose. I plan on pursuing something STEM-related. At the moment, I'm thinking Computer Science + Cognitive Science or CS and Psychology.

-I really love the Carleton student body; everyone seems to be really intelligent, quirky, down-to-earth, and creative. Not at all pretentious.
-Carleton gave me better FA, but only by a couple thousand.

-I think I'd like Providence more than I'd like Northfield, but I'm visiting Northfield next month for the first time.
-Brown's Open Curriculum is definitely a plus.
-I don't care much for prestige, but it's still a small factor (job hunting and everything).
-Closer to home (I'm from CT)
-5th Yr. Master's option

choose Brown, has much more prestige, open curriculum, and perhaps better education

If you were going for a science, I’d think Brown would be better. The 5 year master program is also a plus, and since Brown has graduate programs, the undergraduate programs will probably be more up to the bar of those graduate programs.

Choosing the institution with “more prestige” is a simplistic, knee-jerk approach that many students follow because they are hung up on prestige. Someone talented enough to be accepted at Brown and Carleton will do well at either place and will have plenty of options for graduate school. Pick the place where you think you would be happiest for the next 4 years.

@CodyChesnutt: That’s the thing- I have no idea where I would be happiest, haha. Both colleges possess (many!) characteristics that are extremely important to me, and I could see myself loving either of them, especially because they’re so similar.

Here are some Carleton faculty who have spent time at Brown - ask them their opinion when you visit Northfield:

Ottaway, Susannah, 1998-present, Associate Professor of Early Modern History, British History (Carleton B.A., Brown University, M.A., Ph.D.)
Williams, Harry, 1989-present, David and Marian Adams Bryn-Jones Distinguished Professor of History and the Humanities, African and African American History (Lincoln University B.A., University of Missouri M.A., Brown University M.A., Ph.D.)

@CodyChesnutt: Wow, thank you so much!

I will definitely be sure to do so.

PhD Brown University, 1990

Can’t help much, but you have two great choices! I’d take Carleton in a heart beat . . . but I’d rather wander the 880-acre arboretum than hang out in Providence.

Enjoy your visit!

I just got into Stanford too, so… now everything is even more complicated, haha.

Thanks guys :)

It is hard for me to imagine a likely CS major turning down the opportunity to study in Silicon Valley at one of the world’s great universities (and perhaps intern in the summer at Facebook, Google, or one of the smaller local concerns). Let us know where you end up - and congratulations!
