My cousin is deciding between these three schools. Since I'm currently asking opinions regarding which school I should choose, she asked me to post her dilemma too. She's not sure what she would like to do yet. But she's leaning towards premed. She's would like to know about the quality and prestige of each of the undergraduate programs. Which school should she choose to attend?

If she does pre med at any of those schools and she is at the top of her class she will have a very good chance at a strong med school. I think it will come down to fit.

All three will get her wherever she wants to go, and all three have VERY distinct atmospheres.

I would opt for Brown or Chicago. If she likes the idea of an open curriculum then Brown would be great, if she wants the Core the Chicago.

she’s not sure what she wants to study though.

UChicago is really intense from what I’ve heard. One student said a good week is 300 pages of reading, in addition to other stuff. For some reason, there are people out there who like the idea of an academic boot camp. Who like to be constantly stressed and angry. Read some of the UChicago boards, it’s not good stuff. I’d personally choose Brown.

Brown has a better pre med program than those other schools

300 pages a week is hardly boot camp level. Depending on what you do at Brown you can easily see more than that, you can easily see less. As a science student, I probably average 300 pages a week.

College should be easy! It should only make people read 10 pages a week!!!11111!!!11

It’s funny… because in my experience an “average” non-science class is 150 pages of assigned reading a week at Brown where we’re apparently less “academic boot-camp” like.

Maybe it’s because we’re in the class because we love what we’re learning and most of the time I’m glad to do the reading? Maybe it’s because most students don’t do 100% of their readings ever?

she can’t decide

Cornell has a very strong pre-med program. Make sure she does her due diligence so that she doesn’t pass up this great opportunity. Brown is the weakest program.

If she can’t decide, she should go to the cheapest. None of these are chopped liver. Med school will set her back $200k+.

Yeah, if we are ranking science departments it would go Cornell = Chicago > Brown

Premed: Brown = Cornell > UChicago…

Brown’s premed acceptance rate is really really high… 100% in at least one of top 3 choices? I could be wrong.

Agree with modestmelody . . . “All three will get her wherever she wants to go, and all three have VERY distinct atmospheres.”

I still hate to suggest that just maybe Brown scores a point in its favor in having a median GPA that is as inflated as you can find among top schools. Certainly can’t hurt when putting together med school apps. Still, these 3 are SO different - make sure the glove fits.

she’s leaning towards Cornell

She needs to visit them. Period. I found that the atmosphere at these schools could not be more different.

Visit! She’ll know immediately.
