Brown vs. Edinburgh vs. King's College London

I got accepted to these three schools, and am having such a hard time deciding which one is best. I think Brown is the most selective but I also got no FA so that’s an issue… I come from the EU so both Edinburgh and KCL would be much cheaper. I also want to probably attend Law School after UG (aiming for top schools), so do you think gaining a degree from lower unis would make a difference? It would financially for me for sure. But I also really like the idea of a US college experience. Any advice? Thanks!

What subject did you get into at Edinburgh & KCL?

For law school LSAT and your undergrad marks are more important than the rank of your uni- esp as these are very strong: the 2 UK unis may be ‘lower’ ranked than Brown, but they aren’t exactly low-ranked!

They are obviously very different academic experiences- Brown will give you a much wider range of courses than the other two (your degree won’t be as specialized).

Don’t forget no (legal) alcohol in the US until you are 21.

Where would you want to attend law school? If you aren’t a US citizen or legal permanent resident alien, it makes no sense to study law in the US. If you intend to study law in the EU, you would probably be better served by a first degree from a university there.

Surely Edinburgh and KCL both have exchange programs with universities in the US. You could spend a semester or two here on and exchange and have the “US college experience” for a lot less money than four full years at Brown.

Because you’re EU and want a career in law, I don’t see any advantage of you attending Brown at a higher cost over KCL or Edin.
KCL puts you in London with access to lots of resources that can be very helpful in developing a career in law. I’d go there.

Why do u think Brown is superior to the other 2?

Brown is superb, but it probably gets more applications than it “deserves” and is therefore more selective due to its Ivy League membership, its lack of required courses, and the publicity it gets for being the choice of so many Hollywood stars’ kids.

@collegemom3717 I got offers to study PPE at kings and Economics and Politics at Edinburgh.

@happymomof1 @insanedreamer the thing is idk where I want to live after college, ideally I’d really like to have an international career so traveling around much.

@moooop thanks for your advice. That’s pretty much what I was wondering. Whether it’s worth it to spend so much more in terms of employment opportunities afterwards! As an EU honestly I had applied simply from the name. I we unable to visit and know very little about schools in the USA. How do people in the US see KCL and Edinburgh?

A first degree from KCL or Edinburgh can get you a job with a multinational organization and the possibility of an international career. As for admission for post-graduate work, both of those universities are well-recognized in the US.

Those who know about British universities would respect both, and probably see them as roughly equivalent to Brown.

Are you a dual citizen( EU/US)?
For the UK, I’d probably go with Edinburgh. If you’re a US citizen though it’d make sense to attend Brown.
Next question: what’s your parents’ budget? What are they saying?
For EU citizens, tuition is about $16,000, right? Plus expenses for accomodation/catering, which would be double in London what they are in Edinburgh. So, are your parents willing to pay roughly $8-9,000 for housing, plus about $5,000 for food and miscellaneous (King’s) or, assuming you want to have a meal plan (Pollock) $7,000 for R&B if you have a roommate or about $9-10 for room&board for a single at Edinburgh. Plus basic miscellaneous, probably $2,000 more.
So you’re comparing 39K (King’s) or 28K (Edinburgh) vs. 65K at Brown, correct?

Brown!

@MYOS1634 Nope, for EU citizens Edinburgh tuition is only about 1,800 pounds. So Edinburgh is definitely the cheapest! Moreover in pounds Brown would be 60,000

I am only EU not dual citizenship btw

So unless you’re a US citizen Edinburgh makes the most sense by far !!!

Edinburgh. No contest. (or KCL to be in London)

@MYOS1634 okay, thanks for your opinion!!
@insanedreamer okay thanks. That’s what I was wondering. So how is Brown seen in the USA? Is it considered a rather good (not really top notch tho) college?

It is seen as a really top notch college most can only dream of.

Yes, Brown is seen as top notch in USA (though not exactly on same level as Stanford, Harvard, Princeton, MIT).
But it’s not worth 50,000 pounds more top notch than Edinburgh.
And internationally, at least according to The Times, both Edinburgh and KCL have a higher reputation than Brown.

@insanedreamer Okay wow, is th Ivy League name given lots of weight in the US? KCL and Edinburgh aren’t that selective in comparison. But I understand what you mean - brown is seriously expensive in comparison to the others.

I also noticed the rankings thing. Do you maybe know why it is kinda low?

In order to make sense of what you call “low” rankings, you have to remember that there are 3,700 colleges in the US… Brown is at the tippy top.
But, unless your parents really have the money and don’t mind, not worth £50,000 more than Edinburgh.
