Brown vs. JHU

I plan to major in physics or another science, which do you think would be better Brown or JHU?

some thinly veiled bias from the brown board:
it depends on whether you prefer providence or baltimore (i think there is a clear winner here), a welcoming & collegial student body or a cut-throat one (again, clear winner), and how important undergraduate prestige is to you (again, there is a clear winner)

My daughter’s top two choices were narrowed down to JHU & Brown -- as a math major. She’s also spent summers at JHU as part of the CTY program. The bottom line is simple: both schools are excellent. However, my daughter expects to attend Brown in September for several reasons. In no particular order: Brown is #3 on Princeton Review’s “Happiest Students” list; she hated the food at JHU (though I understand they’re replacing their supplier); Brown seems to be a proponent of a more collaborative work environment; and there’s more to do off campus locally. Finally, she closely examined the course catalogs online at both schools and decided that’s Brown’s offerings were more interesting (to her). Hope this helps…

thanks guys

JHU and Brown couldn't be more different.

JHU is hugely research focused and so is their faculty, so they are less accessbile than at Brown. At Brown they literally fall over themselves to help and talk to you.

Brown is very relaxed. Mind you, Brown is VERY hard, but everyone is chill and laid back. JHU is also VERY hard but also intense and stressful, and competitive.

The pre-med culture is also very strong at JHU. There's nothing wrong with pre-meds, but I can't imagine going to a school where that's the drive of such a high proportion of the student body. Since so many people are applying to med school, it seems as if their competitive outlook influenced the overall academic climate. Then again, I don't have very much experience with JHU... I only visited during my junior year of high school, said "get me out of here!" and never looked back!
