Brown vs JHU

Hello all,
I am a soon to be premed and want to attend, hopefully, Harvard Medical School. I want to know, first, does it matter which undergrad school I attend, between Hopkins and Brown, and, if it does, which is better, not only overall, but with regards to getting into HMS later on.
Thanks

several pre-meds from both schools go on to HMS, however brown pre-meds probably have an easier time getting there. hopkins is notoriously cut-throat for pre-med, whereas brown is famously not.
i'm at harvard now and have lots of HMS friends from brown. the brown pre-med experience is great. low stress, collegial, and lots of opportunities to distinguish yourself from other pre-meds by capitalizing on the open curriculum (since everyone chooses their own classes, everyone automatically ends up pursuing a unique course of study)

I don't know much about medical education and pre-med programs but there's another thing you might want to keep in mind: the Brown campus is very scenic and a really really nice place to be.

JHU, while having excellent facilities of course, probably wouldn't have the same quality of life given that it is in a city that's not considered the most livable (to put it mildly).

Definately Brown. Brown is more reputable, they have a great undergrad focus, great quality of life (number 1 in this category for 2 years in a row on the princeton review), Brown is an Ivy, it is in a capital city. Finally, Brown will open more doors!

Brown may open more doors in most disciplines vs JHU, although wouldn't necessarily say medicine is one of them. I would agree that Brown would be a less stressful, more enjoyable experience. HMS doesn't care that one school is Ivy and the other isn't, only who are the best fits to their class.

I wouldn't be basing much of your decision on which gives you a better chance at HMS since that is a long time off, a lot can change in the interim and there are many other med schools that can also get you to the same place.

ok, personally I have never heard of Brown as a pre-med school and more of a bussiness college, and in your place I would definitely go to Hopkins. The resources at hopkins are amazing, plus there's the fact that Hopkins was made after a donation from Johns Hopkins that also founded the Hopkins Hospital. So, you have an institution that was from the start a research and medicine-oriented university, and one that started its medical school in 1984. Of course having a more relaxed environment is obviously a point in Brown's favor, but personally, coming from a country where name is everything, I would go to Hopkins

I do NOT know much about medical education, but I hear Brown is very strong in this regard (though I don't know if it's as strong as JHU, which is definitely huge).

In particular, have you heard about Brown's PLME (Program in Liberal Medical Education), an 8 yr program where you get your BA in whatever you choose and then go straight to their med school? This might be something you'd be interested in.

As far as your intention to go to HMS, yes, H is a big name, but there are plenty of other extremely strong med schools out there, I wouldn't be fixated on that.

this is tough, let us know what you decided :)

Brown for sure. Hopkins great med placement is a myth in my opinion, just because the med school is great does not mean the undergrad curriculum is amazing. Go to brown: better reputation, much more fun, less competitive, and you'll get better grades.

It is disconcerting that it is so hard to get data on premeds from Hopkins. Many people go there assuming that the illustrious medical center means they will have a great shot at medical school. All the speculation about their committee, weeding out, etc would be solved with a little information:

how many people enter JHU planning on premed? (hard to get this number from any college)
How many end up applying? (lots of places report this figure)

What is the mean MCAT for those who apply, and for those who are admitted?

What is the mean GPA for those who apply, and for those who are admitted?

Lots of places report the GPA and MCAT figures.

If JHU really is a great place to be a premed, then it would show limited weeding out (high proportion of entering premeds end up applying), and relatively low GPA and MCAT means for successful applicants.

Anyone have this info from the premed office or admitted student presentations?

I also forgot to add that Yes, Brown is GREAT when it comes to Pre-med. I still say Brown!

Something like 95% of Hopkins premeds get into med school - this came from their data.
Disclaimer - have 2 Hopkins degrees so I'm a little prejudiced.
How is Brown for music? Do know some very well-educated people at Brown or who went there, would like to know more for D#2, a future humanities major who wants to also study music and take the req premed courses.
