I feel apologetic as I write this, but I’m really interested to know how members of the CC Brown community will react.

My son has been happily ensconced in his decision to go to Brown for the past few weeks – wearing the t-shirt, connecting with future classmates with similar interests (“West Wing,” backpacking), even the head of the viola ensemble – but then he had to go and get a call from Swarthmore today: he’s in off their waitlist. Now what? Should he revisit his decision? Open up that can of worms again? Obviously, it’s up to him; but he does look to us for guidance and to bounce things off of.

I’d appreciate hearing from you folks what you think differentiates Brown and the Brown student body from Swarthmore. What sort of student is the best match for each (wonderful, incredible) place?

Also, Brown has been generous with regard to financial aid. Can we expect Swarthmore to be generous? To try to match? Or are the institutional differences too great in that department?

Thanks, everyone.
