Hey guys I’m gonna be a senior this year and i want to apply ED to either Brown, Vanderbilt, or Upenn. I have visited all the universities and i like em all im kinda stuck. I plan on majoring in neuroscience. I would like to either go to med school after college or do a MD/PhD. The reason i liked these three colleges most is because i feel that they have the best balance. I want to be at a college with a positive atmosphere mainly. Which college do you feel would be best for me based on the path that i plan in taking?

I can’t speak for vanderbilt or upenn, but I’ve heard great things about undergrad neuroscience @ brown

Also, you mention you want a positive atmosphere. Brown is consistently voted one of the happiest schools in the nation and every single time I visit everyone is very kind to me and seem happy to be where they are.

You will not need to compare financial packages?

@BrownParent i have compared using the financial aid calculator and all are very close to each other

OK, good. Well did you read the thread by a medical student on why Brown is best for med school? It’s not super informative, but at least you can get that he was happy with his choice. Brown also has the Brain Science Institute which is interdisciplinary and headed by a Nobel Physicist turned brain researcher. He taught a freshman seminar my daughter’s first year. I don’t know if undergrads do research there but they do everywhere else so I would be surprised if not. My daughter worked there one semester but not in research.

I can’t really compare about the other schools because I am just not as familiar. So read everything. Read all the neuro pages, the courses offered, the research pages. Of course take much consideration into the kind of atmosphere you would like best, they all seem distinct.

One cool thing about Brown is that all the profs teach at the undergrad level, so you are working with profs that might have a couple grad students and research teams are mixed with undergrads, and you can get letters from grad school profs that are researching and publishing in the field.

Brown has an incredible atmosphere and the people are phenomenal. Among the three, I’d say Brown for sure Good luck!

I was in the same shoes a couple of months ago - planning to study neuroscience and accepted to both Brown and UPenn. UPenn doesn’t have a department for neuroscience, but rather an interdisciplinary major called “Biological Basis of Behavior.” From what I saw, both schools had top notch programs in the field and great success in med school acceptance.

However, the schools have VERY different atmospheres. I would think about what you want in your next 4 years and which atmosphere would make you happier.
