Brown vs Vassar, HEEELP

So here's my dilemma: I love the schools pretty much equally but the big thing that's shying me away from applying to Brown this fall is the acceptance rate. I plan on applying to either Vassar or Brown (which is also one of my top schools and also tough to get into) early admission. I know that I can't do both. I know that if I apply to Brown ED (which is the way I'll have the better chance for both) and don't get in, I've pretty much screwed my chances with Vassar and vice versa. I reeealllly need some advice, (if i even have a chance at either ) here's my credentials...

high school junior
African-American
GPA: 3.95 weighted 3.8 unweighted
top ~20% of class of 600
will have taken 8 AP and 5 honors by end of senior year

published poet
Relay For Life committee board, 2 years
National Honor Society, 2 years
School Newspaper 3 years, held an executive position
Art Magazine photo editor, 2 years
student government elected member, 2 years
art club, 3 years
speech, debate, and acting team (got 2nd place at university tournament)
junior and senior leader in PE division, 2 years
peer counselor, 2 years
C.H.A.N.G.E. Foundation member
volunteer on regular basis at church, ~8 years

I plan on writing about how growing up in a predominately white suburb whilst commuting to an all black church every sunday, and initially going to an all black christian school, has shaped the way I am

I think you have a very good shot at Vassar RD if you want to give Brown a shot ED. Keep in mind, though, while Vassar does get a higher acceptance rate in ED, Brown doesn’t (except for athletes etc.). But I’d say your stats are competitive even in the ED pool, and being black helps since LACs are predominantly white.

My friend applied to brown Ed and then was deferred and applied to vassar Ed ii and was accepted (the schools were tied on his list). This is a possibility you could look into

Hey guys, I thought about it and I think I’m going to go with vassar Ed 1. I always subconsciously picture myself there and that never really happened with brown (not too fond of the campus btw). Ill be doing a campus visit soon so that should seal the deal  also, to say the least, I didn’t get a 36 on my act so I’m sure brown might hold that against me, haha. any other thoughts??

If you can picture yourself at Vassar but not Brown, then it’s probably a better fit. I’d be very surprised if you didn’t get into Vassar ED.

I have the same dilemma (but will probably apply Vassar EDI anyway).
Vassar has two rounds of early decision, so what you could do is apply EDI to Brown, and if you don’t get in, apply EDII to Vassar. Just an idea.

hey tmoney94, this is a problem i’ve been dealing with for a few months now. all the while, i was always thinking about vassar where as brown was sort of put on the backboard. personally, i feel that vassar is where i need to be. as people on this post have suggested to me, go with your gut. i’m sure you’d be happy at either :)

Hey Chicago812 and Tmoney94

This was exactly the same dilemma I was faced with this year…until I visited both schools’ campuses. That was pretty much a deal-breaker. I loveloveloved Vasser’s campus and Brown’s was just…meh (it’s all divided up around town and has a very austere feel to it).

Obviously a college’s aesthetic appeal shouldn’t be the sole basis of an important decision like this one but the vibe and structure of a campus can help you decide whether you can see yourself going there. This certainly was the case for me. Anyways, good luck to you both!!

lebagone, i actually visited vassar about a week ago and LOVED it; it’s official, I’m applying EDI. thanks for the advice everyone!

From reading ypur posts I feel you will do well whereever you go
Remember that each school will have its pluses and minuses
Good Luck
