Hello,

I applied to transfer from the University of Southern California (originally went for Music) and have been admitted as a sophomore to Wash U and Brown (spring semester). I am having trouble making up my mind...I would love your input.

The catch is that I have to decide in 9 days before I leave town to work at a summer camp for two months.

Interested in the following areas: Environmental Studies, Anthropology, Economics, Psychology, English and Creative Writing, maybe Poly Sci (still undecided, but generally interested in social sciences) (probably want to be jamming with other musicians too)

Wash U looks like a very supportive, friendly atmosphere where lots of nice, smart people go to school...it's a safe choice, like taking your best friend to prom, yes?

I get the impression that Brown is a little more of an independent and edgy type place and that intellectual life is more vibrant there.

Wherever I go, I plan on working hard to integrate myself into the school.

Thank you so much for your help!

Wow, congrats on two great choices. Let us know what you decide. You can’t go wrong, can you afford to go with your gut? I mean, is money the same at both? Will one cost more because of travel expenses?

What a nice dilemma to have. I don’t know too much about WashU and how it is set up. But I know Brown is an amazing place and it seems to me with your diverse interests it will allow you to explore. My daughter (from CA) loved Brown, she felt very warm and fuzzy there and described it as ‘homey’ to me. It is very diverse in types of people.

You listed 7 separate subjects and if you take one class in each, you probably won’t graduate in 4 years from Wash U because you have structured majors while Brown will let you after 32 classes.

Brown has requirements for majors (um, concentrations.)

Which one are you leaning toward?

Thanks for all the responses! Right now I’m leaning toward Brown.

Brown is a good choice. I don’t know much about Wash U, I do hear it has a good reputation for pre-med and economics.

I went to WashU for undergrad and have taken some classes at Brown. I think WashU has a more beautiful campus, but Brown’s surrounding area is more fun and happening. If you still cant decide, go with Brown because it has an open curriculum. WashU students are known to be very friendly and happy, but so are Brown students. They’re very liberal. I saw rainbow flags on campus. So, I assume people there are very open minded and welcoming.

I’d go with Brown, assuming that its reputation for being very liberal wouldn’t bother you.

Thank you everyone. This has been an incredibly difficult decision. Both schools are incredible places, and I’m %100 sure I could thrive at either. I’m honored to have the opportunity to attend both. I have chosen to attend Brown because I feel like it’s a better fit with regards to my personality and interests. I have a familiarity with it through my dad who went there and visits I have taken with him. It has always given me a comfortable feeling. Again this has been an incredibly challenging situation, and I thank you all again for your input and support.
