Brown vs. Wesleyan

hey

i've heard a lot about Wesleyan and how it's like a school for people who don't get into Brown.

How god exactly is Wesleyan? Why is it sometimes even considered better than brown?

Thanks

It's not.

Wow won't let me post with only 6 characters.

well it is in some areas probably...like Economics, where Wesleyan is considered one of the best (possibly the best) LACs for that major (maybe right behind Wellesley)...whereas Brown has a nice Econ program, but it isn't considered the best or anything.

I'm applyin to both...if you get into Brown, I'd jump on it. I think Brown's acceptance rate is so incredibly low and Wesleyan is quite similar to Brown, so yeah you probably see your fair share of Brown rejects there. But does that mean the school is a backup? I doubt it...Wesleyan is a very commendable school, and many people would just rather go to an LAC than a university.

The 'typical student' that attends Brown is very similar to the 'typical student' that attends Wesleyan--i.e. bohemian, intellectual, etc.

Brown has more students and an open curriculum... Wesleyan features a traditional liberal arts curriculum... Ultimately, would you prefer a university or a liberal arts college?

I don't think that Wesleyan is a back-up for Brown anymore than Amherst is a back-up for Harvard, (or similar comparison btw. a well-known Uni and well-known LAC.)

As to why Wesleyan might be considered "better" in some cases--Wes has very well-known film, English, and econ depts. The College of Social Studies and College of Letters are also very well-respected.

Wesleyan also has an open curriculum. There are no gen-ed requirements.

I'd also imagine that Brown offers more research opportunities than Wesleyan (but don't quote me on that).

someone from my high school transferred from Brown to Wesleyan... either school isn't better than the other... it comes down to personal preference

Wesleyan's American Flag Burning Department is said to be slightly better than Brown's.

i have a cousin who graduated from brown, and his gf graduated from wes. they think their schools are very similar

thanks so much for the replies...i'm thinking of biochem or chem major, so i guess brown will have better research opportunities

Take away the "Ivy" label from Brown, and it would be the other way around. Wesleyan is probably the better school.

dwincho, why do u say Wesleyan is a better school?

Wesleyan wins almost by default; Brown has few if any eye-popping, world-class graduate schools (other than possibly, Classics) which makes the academic playing field remarkably even for an LAC like Wesleyan which needs only a few TAs to run a NSF eligible science lab all year round. Add the fact that neither Providence nor Middletown are exactly cities that never sleep. And Wesleyan has the prettier campus IMHO. :)

I agree with John Wesley; however, GotCollege?, if you're interested in med, Brown has a med school. Wesleyan doesn't.

Regardless, Wesleyan features excellent science facilities, and its liberal arts offerings are comparable to Brown's.

Both campuses are beautiful.

The same reason some people say Brown is better...personal preference, bias towards LACs.

that makes sense, thanks everyone.

I love it when people make these totally unfounded statements like this. I mean there is absolutely nothing to back this up - there is absolutely no way to ever back this up -- I mean how does one go about "measuring" Brown without the Ivy status? Of course that probably helps it attract top students over, say, a school like Wesleyan - I mean that ALONE would probably suggest that Brown is better.

People who make statements like this are most likely Brown rejects / Brown wannabes - oh, wait, what do we have here?

Brown is better on every imaginable category I can think of.

Categories in which Brown isn't necessarily better than Wesleyan:
-Film (Wesleyan has one of the best depts. in the country)
-Econ (ditto)
-English (ditto)

How does my OP in the link make me a Brown reject? I won't even bother to apply as a matter of fact. If Brown is better on every category, how come Wesleyan has superior film, economics, english, chemistry and history departments?

LOL. Film? If you were really interested in film, you'd go to USC or NYU.

Give me a break.
