Brown vs. Wesleyan

^ Brown is about 10th-15th most selective (comparable to Duke, Pomona, Dartmouth). Wesleyan is about 35th-40th most selective (comparable to Carleton, Vanderbilt, Wellesley). Among >3000 colleges and universities, that’s a very small difference. In 75th percentile M+CR scores, it represents about a 50-point spread. Do you think you’d notice a difference in the quality of a typical seminar discussion or dorm room bull session? Do you think employers or grad schools care enough about it to pick a Brown student over a Wesleyan student with better college grades and experience?

I know this is a super old thread, but I just want to say for the record (since this thread has been bumped): it is NOT better at being an LAC. As someone who wanted an LAC and was choosing between Brown and Wes for ED, I ended up going with Wes, because Brown being “LAC-like” was not good enough. The difference in size of student body was HUGE.

Also, Wes’s film department is awesome. Basically, I entirely fit JuJu’s model:

*a student who prefers liberal arts colleges to universities considers Wesleyan “better.” (YEP!)
*a student who majors in one the aformentioned subjects considers Wesleyan’s departments, (and thus Wesleyan, for his/her needs,) “better.” (YEP!)

Thus, for ME, Wes was the better fit. Don’t regret it at all.

(Also, another thing Wes is better at is ethnomusicology. Also, COL and CSS, since those are unique programs. Also, of course, fit, depending on the person. They attract similar but not exactly the same students).

Brown is a great school, and more selective. If your #1 choice is Brown, Wes is probably a good choice as a lower reach, unless you hate the idea of LACs. But that doesn’t mean Brown is necessarily BETTER. They both have their strengths and weaknesses, and it depends on the person and what they’re looking for.

You have to admit it (the Wesleyan Center for the Arts) has its venerable antecedants:
