@kahmerve I am from the Caribbean, and I plan to major in Astronomy. And you? Where are you from?
@lime20002001 wait u received an email? From the admissions office? I only received one that confirmed my waiting list spot.

@madd06 isn’t z-listing when they defer your admission to the next year? Have they ever done it before?

@Kellogs12 correct. I think in the last few years they’ve chosen a small number of kids and gave them acceptance to the next year’s class. I spoke with a kid who got “z-listed” 2 years ago, and if you look at the 2016 and 2017 threads you’ll see some kids were offered deferred admission.

guess it’s probably better than being denied… What universities did you guys commit to in the mean time?

Also got the impression it would be around 30-50 from the waitlist.

Uc Berkeley if I don’t get in.

Don’t they want a class of 1560? So far 1570 have committed and with the summer melt it’ll become 1540ish so I’m guessing they’ll admit 20 more or less

Don’t forget about kids taking gap years?

Committed to UC Berkeley for the meantime as well.

gap year kids (25-30) + kids accepted of waitlist at other schools = around 50 spots?

But then how do we factor in kids who took gap years from the class of 2017? It’s impossible to know

Could be… But I thought that the 25 they were referring to who took gap years weren’t included in the 1570… Maybe I’m wrong.

If we are optimistic and say there are 50 spots available then it’s likely they’ll admit 65-70 as not all will accept. 65-70 students out of 500? 13% which is pretty good.

@astrogirl I am from Turkey. And my intended major is Mechanical Engineering. 8 students were admitted from Turkey and 3 of them enrolled. I think I might have a chance but who knows…I would even take a gap year If I was z-listed.

Last year because of the ‘summer melt’ 52 students did not enroll. Now, 1570 students enrolled. (Optimistically) 1570-52=1518 and the intended class size is 1560. 1560-1518=42. And there is the ‘z-list’ If they offer a ‘z-list’ to 20 students. It is 62. So hopefully 60 students will get off the waitlist

And I think the ones who wont accept a waitlist offer should withdraw their application

Yeah I withdrew my application from other universities where I knew for sure I wasn’t gonna go… Then again some people just like to have trophy acceptances… To show off

Thing is the summer melt includes all the withdrawals that take place during the whole summer… Our applications are going to be reviewed during this next month so we don’t fully benefit from the summer melt… For example if say 5 students decide 1 week before not to attend there is going to be 5 vacant spots and no one from the wait list would get them… Which kinda sucks.

Not exactly. In the article they stated that they were reacting to the ‘summer melt’ so they will take students according to last years ‘summer melt’ statistics.

@kahmerve I’m from California and I’m majoring in biology. And I did not apply for aid.

What is summer melt?

Last year the students who enrolled by May 1st decided not to enroll by september they call it summer melt. And the number was 52 for class of 2017. Now they say that they will take students from waitlist considering the summer melt. So this means more students from the waitlist.
