I’ve been in contact with the Brown admissions office, and they have stated that they have sent ALL decisions via regular mail already. I am an International student, and I was wondering which address they sent my letter to. Under my Brown account, I have a permanent address and an alternative mailing (data rage) address.

They have sent all decisions already?

How is that possibly unless they are all rejections? I thought they sent decisions in waves as spots opened up, and some people have already confirmed they are admitting a handful of applicants…

‘Wait list admission decisions were mailed earlier this week. You will receive your decision soon.’
That was the reply I got, and asking if they could email me instead, they replied:
We are not releasing decisions by any other means than the post. The letters have already been sent out and should arrive within the next week or so. If you have not received your letter by the end of next week, please call us at 401-863-2378.

as was alluded to in another post, the handful are probably not average applicants but more like recruits or children of the very, very wealthy. They are probably overcommitted even if they assume a certain number leave because of waitlist admits at other schools and so they are just putting everyone out of their misery so they don’t have to keep waiting.

so you’re saying, all of these letters are most likely all rejections?

I think the fact that they are sending all decisions at the same time suggests this.

This is why I hate getting my hopes up

yes. I am saying they are most likely rejections given the fact that they are sending all of the waitlisters a decision this early. When I was waitlisted back in 05, I had gotten in at this point (in fact I believe it was exactly may 17th 2005, but that was a monday or tuesday) and there were several CC posters who didn’t hear anything until june or maybe even july. I obviously could be wrong, but everyone being notified now does not bode well.

If they are sending out notices to everyone then they must expect to remain oversubscribed. They may well have admitted a handful of the rich and/or connected (faculty children?) as a courtesy, but they have no need or desire to replace any accepted applicants who choose to go elsewhere.

If they told you “wait list admission decisions,” that may mean they only sent letters to those admitted…? Not sure, that wording isn’t super clear to me!

“all decisions” is as clear as day to me, sorry :(

There was an article in the BDH that mentioned much higher than expected yield which suggested this meant that none of the waitlisted applicants would get an admissions offer. Apparently, this was the case last year as well (which I didn’t know until I read that).

Sorry folks, I am sure it’s super disappointing but this is not looking like a good year for the waitlist.

[U. yield rate hits 15-year high ? Brown Daily Herald](U. yield rate hits 15-year high - The Brown Daily Herald)

Wait, does this mean they are not using the Z-list at all?

That seems weird, last year there were some z-list decisions even though the wait list wasn’t being used.

I have no idea what the “z-list” is.

The z-list for our class is the group of people who are admitted into the class of 2018 off of the waitlist!

Looks like that’s all folks…saw this online this morning. Good luck to everyone at whatever school you have chosen to attend…you will do amazing things!

From Brown:

When we wrote you earlier of the Board’s decision to place your name on our Waiting List, we had hoped to be able to consider you for admission at a later time. The high number of commitments from accepted students, however, means that we will not be able to make any offers to waitlisted students for the Class of 2017 at Brown.

The great majority of nearly 29,000 young men and women who applied to Brown this year are clearly capable of performing very well academically and of making significant contributions to the College community in other ways. With nearly twenty candidates for every available space, the Board’s task in selecting the members of the Class of 2017 has been extremely challenging and, at times, emotional.

We want to acknowledge your accomplishments and to reiterate how much care we have taken in the admissions process to get to know all of our applicants, and how difficult and painful it therefore is to deny so many.

Although you may well be disappointed by our decision, remember that in the long run where you go to college is far less important than what you do with the opportunities you surely will have. Thank you for taking the time to prepare such a thoughtful application and thank you for your interest in Brown.

You have my best wishes for success in your college plans.

Sincerely,
James S. Miller
Dean of Admission

Go Brown!!

@greengopher, you said “online.” Do you mean the email or the online portal? When I checked Brown’s online portal a moment ago, it said “2014 Early Decision Applicants” and there was nothing I could find for the waitlist.

Sorry for the confusion! By online, I meant I saw it on CC in the Brown Waitlist thread in the Brown 2017 sub forum.

GG

I just received my letter from them offering admission to the class of 2018 (Z-listed). The letter said there were very few students (<40) offered this though. So not everything is a “no”.

@Magic Bard

Congrats. Did you get this letter in the mail or by email?

Are you an international?
