Has anyone done the online course, "So You Want to be a Doctor?" Online @ Brown University's Pre-College programs? Pre Med Online Classes for High School Students | Brown University

I was wondering how long the hour commitments were, as in outside work & classes/lectures. It says 10 hours/week in the Summer, and 5 hours/week in the Fall, but is there more outside work like essays & research to do?

Also... would it be advisable to take this program while overlapping with another summer (not online) program over the summer? or over the fall of senior year?

Lastly, would this program look good if I plan to apply to pre-med schools/accelerated programs? I don't have many medical related EC's, so I'm looking for some!

Thanks so much! Any advice would be appreciated, even if you haven't taken the course or if you plan too as well.

I think Brown is pretty well known for offering overpriced courses to make a quick buck off high schoolers. That’s certainly not to say that you won’t learn anything, but there are countless “better” options out there. Perhaps you could intern at a hospital or with a university researcher?

Is this the so called “med camp” featured on Secret Life of the American Teenager. I never heard of such a “real life” program. It does sound like it’s opportunistic, taking advantage of the many high school kids who think they want to go to med school.

I don’t watch Secret Life so I’m not sure what you are referring to!

chaseholl: I think interning at a hospital/researching with a university professor would be great, I’m just not sure how to get those opportunities. Any suggestions? Would just emailing a few places be the best way to find out?

I think the intern idea is wonderful, but I have been phoning the hospitals and medical related organization for internship opportunity. They all turned me down with the reason being of either 1. under age 2. The intern opportunity is only available for university students… This really sucks. The only thing I have not tried yet is to contact the university research… Any one who had gotten the position as a intern in either a lab or a hospital? Could you share some of your experience and state HOW did you get this intership?

I think you probably have to know someone who can get you in to a hospital as an “intern” or someone other than a volunteer. Looking back, my roommate from med school got her father to call an old friend and somehow got her into an OR as a student. I on the other hand started at the bottom rung and volunteered as a candy striper and made beds and fed the elderly and infirmed on Sunday mornings. You have to start somewhere. During my second summer volunteering, they let me work in radiology and put away xrays (back then nothing was digital). Start networking!!!
