Browsing the Internet

Okay, so this may seem like a silly question.
I vaguely remember reading something about using the UVa wireless/wired connections in regards to certain sites.
So here's my question:
Are you allowed to use the UVa connection for things such as facebook and online gaming, or is it only intended for school-use?
I know that sounds silly, but I was just curious - thanks for kind responses in advance!

You can definitely use it for anything you want. The only time you will get in trouble is if you distribute pornography (I only say this because it happened). Also if you exceed your bandwidth and I am not aware of the current limits (I know I DL’d a gigabyte of DDR packs one day and nothing happened).

^Well obviously you can’t use it for anything illegal (which distributing porn would fall under - distributing any copyrighted material for that matter).

what about torrenting?

^As long as you aren’t uploading copyrighted content, I believe you should be fine. I know where most people get into trouble is the actual uploading of copyrighted content, not the downloading. Not sure though.

Remember that you’ve pledged not to lie, cheat, or steal.

UVA used to have a policy where if you were caught DL’ing for instance a movie, they would cover for you once (and let you know they had done so) and after that you were on your own with the feds. Not sure if it is still in effect.

damn… I dont know if I should even try then with all these mixed reviews, I mean… I use transmission for mac for torrenting and all I want to do is see the new episode of curb and entourage haha…

if your parents have comcast on the go or whatever it is called you can watch it on your computer for free
