I’m so tired of reading stuff like that. Why should that money go to scholarships to a few people when the whole student body pays into the fund? The money we pay to USAC is supposed to provide a benefit to the student body as a whole, not subsidize other people’s education.

^^^haha, is everyone ready to have tuition and taxes go up even more to now provide for all of these illegal immigrants who can now get taxpayer money? What a crackpot.

I mean, seriously - you work your ass off, struggle to make 60k a year, have a kid that has to take out massive loans just to afford school, all the while some ***** hoped a fence, squatted and had a kid in this country, and is now entitled to programs that give free food, shelter, and now education?

@binks09: I think you may have just spawned a **** storm…this will be interesting

^you just opened a can of worms lol

wowza though… I knew the private funds part passed, but the public funds is now at Jerry Brown’s desk? (he’s going to pass it for the votes of course…)

Its funny that undoubtedly many of the students who protest tuition hikes are the same ones that fight for the dream act. Its nice to feel sympathy towards undocumented students, but in this economic climate, its not realistic. If you Google it, this part of the bill will cost the state up to $40 million a year…I wonder who’s going to foot the bill?

It also ignore the crux of the problem: what do with illegal immigrants. They still won’t be able to get jobs, go to grad school/contribute to the work force. That has to be resolved at the federal level…good luck getting the Senate and House to agree on that any time soon. (And YOU KNOW big business will spend $$$ to keep legalization out…they need their cheap labor force)

I love the contention that they will help diversify the job market and fulfill needed jobs
…what jobs? Tell that to the 12% of the CA workforce unemployed (and that’s heavily underrepresented)

Luckily, the bill will be implemented in January 2013. I’ll have graduated by then and only have to pay the tax increase. For everyone else on financial aid who won’t have graduated, good luck.

/rant

Anyway, don’t hope for Lady Gaga lol, way out of our budget. Like previous years, they’ll probably get some ok artists.

I completely agree. Typical comment from UCLA Homecoming Facebook page:
“these are OUR STORIES. As an undocumented, first-generation college student, I don’t receive financial aid, work study, or even QUALIFY for loans (so, no, taking loans out to pay for school isn’t a viable option. These student fees, which i pay INTO and get nothing back for from the university, mean something more than just pride to lots of people. How 'bout students get some help paying for school when tuition exponentially increases and i’m slowly being kicked out? I have to pay $4,636.70 out-of-pocket every quarter just to take classes. Pride doesn’t take $23k.”

If he was truly interested in fairness, he would say that the money should be refunded. Instead he suggests (implicitly here but much more obvious in context of previous comments on the page) that this money should go to scholarships for “undocumented” (read: illegal immigrant) students including him. So we should all just pay for your education because YOU made the choice to attend college in a country YOUR parents chose to immigrate to illegally? Apparently America’s notion of self-reliability is a thing of the past.

COOL STORY GUYS. wasn’t the lineup released last year on aug 30? sooo… maybe the artist bailed on us and we’re trying to secure a new performer?

Why would Rebecca black bail?!

How is this a “YOU” choice? Guess those damn people should have chosen better parents. Cool line about self-reliance. Everyone here at UCLA is clearly funding themselves with no outside contributions at all. Oh wait.

Was it not the person’s choice to attend college in the United States? It’s not like anyone put a gun to their head and made them go to a school that they couldn’t afford in a country where they don’t have legal status. It was a personal decision, and they should deal with the consequences.

And no, obviously not everyone is funding themselves. But it’s a parents choice to fund their child’s education and they should be allowed to make the decision. However, I didn’t choose to have the money I pay/will pay in taxes support someone who is in the country illegally. As for grants to poorer students, I’m for the most part against them (even as a recipient of both Pell and Cal Grants). However, at least these people are receiving money from a system that they and their families pay into and from a country that they are in legally.

I just think it’s ridiculous that the government is now not just expected and demanded to support the financial decisions of its own citizens, but of people who broke the law and shouldn’t even be in public schooling, let alone the country, to begin with.

Really, COOL STORY, GUYS. Now can we get back to BruinBash? Which artist could they possibly be bringing?

We can keep speculating who they are going to bring. Although it’s not really speculating, it’s just us saying who we wish they would bring only to later be disappointed when they reveal the lineup. It’s pointless to keep throwing the names of artists out there. I find these controversial topics more interesting…so keep the riveting tales coming chaps (srs)

That was last year

hahahaha he deleted his post (:

Don’t they check social security numbers and driver’s license before they are allowed to enroll?

Wow smiley good job you actually found out who would be playing…and nah never heard of them in my life

Haha even Pandora hasn’t heard of them. I tried to create a station for them and it came up with no results. Weak!

@brosiedon welllll what can I say… I just do work (: .
yeah… hopefully the other performers are more recognizable ahah

I just watched a couple videos of them on youtube. They REALLY suck in my opinion.
