past winners - were your references contacted?
Yes. But having your references contacted does not necessarily mean that you won. The year my student won, her references were contacted, but I knew other finalists whose references were contacted who did not win.
References being contacted is a positive sign, but isn’t a sure thing.
mine weren’t. so i think it’s game over for me 
Don’t lose hope. I can’t know for sure that every winner’s references were contacted, or that the process is the same each year. I can only speak to what my student experienced.
