Oh the reply above was for lois1992

Congratulations to everyone from a Class of '12! You’ll be filling my shoes come late August, and I hope you carry the light blue lantern high I’m a little sad to part with it, but I know you’ll do a fantastic job. That said, if you’re down to making a final decision and having a dilemma about that big choice, you can hit me with any questions! I work as a tour guide for Admissions, so I know a loooot about the school beyond simply being a student, and I’m a senior with a lot of experience under her belt so I can answer whatever questions you may have about pretty much anything!

Light blue! That’s the best color!

I was accepted to the class of 2016 (!) Does anyone know if freshman can enter in the second semester? I tried to find the answer on their website, but I didn’t have any luck…

About starting Freshman Year in the 2nd semester; you should get in touch with the admissions office directly to help you out with your concerns. Congratulations, by the way!

Why do you want to start in the 2d semester? Even if they let you do it, I would strongly advise against it.

Why? Maybe the accepted applicant can make ends meet financially if she works over the summer and thru fall to matriculating January '13. Or, maybe she’s totally burned out academically but from a wealthy family and she and the mother want to travel to Europe or elsewhere for several months. I know a young man who graduated from Harvard and was provided a minor league professional baseball contract. Also, he was accepted to Harvard medical school. Harvard medical school had no problem granting a year off prior to matriculating with the following years class.

I think the question was more about starting the second semester rather than taking time off. My daughter has had a great gap year, which Bryn Mawr was very supportive of. However, starting 2nd semester means missing customs week, missing Emily Balch seminars, and not being in the same situation as your peers. It would be very difficult socially and academically to start 2nd semester. I would recommend taking the entire year off if you need time financially or to pursue other interests. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

At face value I read a blunt “why” question. I read nothing into it.

You might have a point.

I agree with shishigashira. Bryn Mawr operates in such a way that a lot of attention and emphasis is focused on the freshmen. To jump into the year midway would mean a bit of catchup in terms of semester-sensitive things like Emily Balch seminars, customs, and traditions.

I deferred my admission in favor of a gap year and Bryn Mawr was very supportive of my decision. If any prospective students have questions about my experience, please don’t hesitate to message me. It was a very rewarding year and I believe it made me appreciate Bryn Mawr even more.

accepted!!! so happy, i’m leaning towards bryn mawr, anyone else in my position, we should chat!

I received “Congratulations!” too!!!
But I cannot decide which college to attend, please give me some advice!!
I am choosing between College of William and Mary , Denison University with scholarship, and Bryn Mawr.
Thanks for the help!!

I didn’t look at this thread again after the initial response to my post; sorry. As to why I would want to start in mid-year, it is because I have some health problems and might not be physically able to attend in the fall. However, I might be well enough by mid-year to attend. Since I would prefer not to wait a year to attend, I just wondered if starting mid-year was an option. I did call the admissions office like the jg0339 suggested. They were very helpful; they strongly advised against it due to what I would miss. I only came up with the idea after Mount Holyoke admitted me to its spring term. I didn’t even know that was an option and I wondered if Bryn Mawr had a similar option.

Also desperately in love with Bryn Mawr. I was accepted this spring for the class of 2016. Unfortunately, I just can’t afford it. I really can’t see myself anywhere else; so do you think I can defer this late in the game? (The reply deadline is May 1st)

AMJ918, I would definitely send an email inquiring about deferment ASAP, explaining your situation and proposing what you wish to do with your gap year. I took a gap year before matriculating and found the entire process to be very easy and Admissions was very accommodating.
