Bryn Mawr, Delaware Honors Program

Bryn Mawr Early Decision...Chances?
I'm so scared...

I have a 1290 SAT (700 v 590 m) and my gpa is 3.25 from a tough private school. Four years of a varsity sport, various clubs/community service/work, and have won a couple writing awards. Essay was pretty good (I thought, but maybe not) and I think recs should be really good.

I'm also curious about my chances at University of Delaware Honors Program (in state). I also have taken some classes at the school over the summer, if that helps at all, and my brother is in this honors program as well.
Thanks!!

bump, bump

hey! i think you have a lovely chance to get in if your essay is good and stuff. good luck!!

How hard is Delaware (non honors) out of state?

I've got a 28 ACT (~1260) and a 4.6 w, 3.94 u/w, bunches of ECs with some state and county wide leadership positions. I applied regular decision and not to the honors program. What do you think?

Have you visited the school? How is it? What is the surrounding area like? I haven't visited and don't plan to unless I get in with some bit of aid.

Good luck!

Good chance. Does Bryn Mawr look more at grades/gpa or SAT? I have an awesome gpa 99.9 w, and im top 5% of my class but my SAT sucks. Thats the only part of my app bringing me down. Thanks.

For the Delaware honors program you should have around 1300+ SAT or equivalent ACT, and a 3.7+ unweighted GPA(or around top 10%). Prestige of the academics at your high school is taken into account also. I'm applying in-state from my school which has 220 kids in it, and last year 169 out of 177 that applied were accepted to the university(the second biggest UD supplier from one school, and second only because the top school is three times our size). 18 of the 90 that actually enrolled were in the honors program, which makes my school the one with the most honors students from one school.

anovice, as to your question. I have lived most of my life near UD, the campus is nice, and it's a Newark's and pretty good area to live in(it really gives you that college town feel). The closest major city is philadelphia which is about an hour and a half away. There is a lot of things to do in the area, Main Street is a common place to find students, which is right on the campus. Their are many shops right there, some restaurants, and a movie theatre. There are several movie theatres, a big mall, and big name stores all within fifteen minutes of the campus. UD is particular known for its partying. There's definately always something to do their, and they have a very good academic program. My counselor likes to call it the "public ivy". As far as acceptance to non-honors, you have a decent shot because of your high GPA and decent ACT. As far as scholarship you have a chance, but don't expect much because Delaware really gives preference to in-state students and this makes it much more difficult for out of state students. My school is pretty much top in the state as far as academice, and the lowest SAT score for someone that was given a scholarship was 1260, but they got it for other reason's. So that put's you in a similar position. Anyway, if it's not a huge trip I would reccommend visiting, and good-luck.

Thanks for all the responses...any other opinions? Especially about Bryn Mawr?
Thanks!

bump, bump

I have no idea, but I love Bright Eyes. Tickets to see Conor + crew on Jan 19... I can't wait.

hi,
glad to hear you're applying to bryn mawr! I think you have a good shot at getting in. This year they're having a really bad retention rate so they need to accept more frosh and fill up the empty spots. Your SAT scores are a little bit low but I think BMC accepts such a wide range of scores that there's really no telling (I had one friend who got a 1600 and another who was in the low 1200 range) Just a hint they LOVE diversity. A lot of the students have lived over seas or come from different ethnicities. Don't know if this helps you at all.....i don't want to discourage you about Bryn Mawr at all but just something that ppl didn't tell me when I came here - this school is GREAT academically but it is really REALLLLY tiny. In the event that you do get in just make sure you want something this small before you get here.
But anyways.....Good Luck :)

anisad,
my daughter is considering Bryn Mawr. What specifically don't you like about "REALLY tiny"? What are you missing? Why has retention been so bad t his year?

By "really tiny"....there aren't enough people here to make it a very active campus. It is about the size of a large highschool. Because of its size it is very VERY quiet, there aren't that many courses to choose from, and a couple departments aren't very strong. (What subjects are your daughter interested in?) I think the retention rate has been pretty bad because of social reasons though. Bryn Mawr can make up for its course limitations by letting students go to UPenn, Haverford, and Swarthmore for ones it dosn't offer. However, when a lot of students come here they are disappointed in the lack of clubs, of events on campus, etc. I don't want to give you the impression that Bryn Mawr is a disaster socially. I've made some really wonderful wonderful friends but am in the process of watching half of them transfer out because Bryn Mawr doesn't hav the major they want, the social opportunities they want, or the atmosphere they want. Of course, everyone's experience is different......some people LOVE it here. I recommend that your daughter talk to other students to get a more well rounded idea of Bryn Mawr. Sorry this is so long but i hope it helps :)

hey anisad! I have a ?. I have a great gpa, but low sats scores; gasp (1120). Should I still apply, because I'm very interested in the school! Thanks.

How did you do on SAT IIs ? Did you take any AP courses - I was homeschooled so I'm not sure about the whole AP thing but it seems alot of ppl here have taken AP courses and/or college classes prior to coming here. (If you haven't don't worry - I know a few people who didn't do that stuff either) I think Bryn Mawr usually lets people in who have SATs in the vicinity of 1300 but I would still apply - esp with your good GPA. In your app just try to set yourself apart. The school is looking for unique individuals so try to give them a sense of that when you apply. Good luck!

Thanks! Yea I'm currently taking 3 AP classes, and have some unique actitivites. I think cheerleading would be unique since most ppl think cheerleaders and ditzy/dumb, and I disprove that sterotype. I didn't take SAT 2's yet. I'm still gonna apply, I'm just going to try to wow them at the interview. I loved when I visited there, everyone was so friendly- I was just walking around and students would come up to me and say hi, and if I needed any help or had ?'s about the school. It is definetly a wonderful lace.

Thanks for your response, anisad. My daughter is interested in history, poli sci, writing and literature-film. Thinking about journalism career and would like to write for a good campus newspaper. Also likes theater and computer. She is not a party-type, enjoys good conversation and exchange of opinions.

bmc and haverford have a joint newspaper which i'm sure she could write for - however journalism isn't a major here (i believe we usually have only one class on journalism). english department is good, creative writing department doesn't offer enough courses for a major but your daughter could have a concentration in cw. Theater is awful here...my one friend is trying to transfer because the department is too small. I'm a poli sci major and so far the department is good but relies heavily on courses that haverford offers.

What is the best department that Bryn Mawr offers in your opinon?

anisad, is taking poli sci at haverford regarded as an advantage or disadvantage by Bryn Mawr students?
