My daughter was not accepted to her first three choices (all top schools in NYC). So now she is deciding between Bryn Mawr and Bucknell. Her primary interests are music and English (creative Writing and journalism). Any thoughts on the better choice between these two? also, she has been accepted to TCNJ, UDel, and UMass-A, but thinks these will likely be out but if there are those with thoughts on these as well, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

This is a tough choice if money is no object. If it is, run the numbers through this calculator, and see whether or not the offers are different: [FinAid | Calculators | Advanced Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid)

Bryn Mawr is in the Philly suburbs, and has good access to public transportation. Bucknell is in a more remote location, that is not at all like NYC and is harder to get to without a car. How important is the transportation issue for her?

Has she visited both of these places, and how does she feel about them? They have very different feels to them. Both are liberal arts institutions, and I doubt whether they have strong music departments. But, both have good alumnae/i networks, so should have decent internship and job placement. If she has time in her schedule to squeeze in a second visit to one or both, that might be the best thing for her to do.

Wishing you all the best as you help her through this!

These two schools are incredibly different socially and politically. I think there are a lot of students who’d love one and hate the other. What is she into besides academics? What kind of people does she get along with?

NOT preppies (one of her concerns about Bucknell) and not all academics (one of her concerns about Bryn Mawr). Barnard would have be perfect but they didn’t seem to think so.

Hi hannahsmama,

Which school did your daughter decide on, and how is she enjoying it?

The reason I’m asking is that my daughter is in exactly the same situation. She got accepted to Bucknell and Bryn Mahr as well as U of Mass Amherst. She got wait listed at Barnard. Funny that our daughters (mine two years later) had such a similar result.
