Bryn Mawr vs Smith

Hi! I know this might have already been discussed plenty of time but I truly don’t know which is right for me. Unfortunately, I am an international student and I wouldn’t get to visit both campuses before I decided.

I am a prospective double major in cs and political science/government and an international student going to US for the first time.

Bryn Mawr
-better food
-much easier to register courses at Haverford
-the campus looks really beautiful
-as a prospective Computer Science major I really like the labs at Bryn Mawr
-their acceptance rates are getting lower

Smith
-open curriculum
-more classes available on campus
-houses
-name recognition (sorry, this is a bit shallow)
-larger alumni network

Okay! so originally I was leaning towards Smith because of its open curriculum but after receiving the packet from Bryn Mawr the card from the admissions office was so nice that it made me fall into making this hard decision.

Please give me some advice!!!

Both have good name recognition

I wouldn’t discount the BMC alumnae network. My D (BMC '11) has networked with many BMC grads who have provided her with great advice and leads for employment. I was quite impressed with how helpful these women have been.

Couple of other points for BMC: the bi-co/tri-co consortium (You can take classes at Haverford or Swarthmore.) There’s a shuttle bus that goes back and forth. You can even walk from BMC to Haverford. I believe that the distances are greater between the various schools in the Five College Consortium than they are in the BMC/Haverford/Swarthmore consortium.

Being close to an urban area is a plus for BMC. Philadelphia (especially with respective to internships) is a commuter train ride away from BMC. Boston is about 2 hours from Northampton.

I think you’ll get a great education at either college–good luck with your choices.

The name recognition advantage actually may go to Bryn Mawr, partly because just a more interesting name linguistically than “Smith.” And I think BMC has more references in movies and gets mentions in Mad Men, haha, and of course Katherine Hepburn.

That said, both equally good, prestigious schools.

hey justchamp, I’d encourage you to check out this thread with a lot of helpful insight about Bryn Mawr: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/womens-colleges/1481890-bryn-mawr-agnes-scott.html

Let me know if there are any other specifics I can shed light on as a current student. Good luck!

Haha, the talk about pop culture references reminded me of The Simpsons, there’s an episode in which Lisa is told that she’ll get a scholarship to the Seven Sister of her choice if she loses a Spelling Bee. If I remember correctly Bryn Mawr and Smith kiss XD
