I am so stuck between a rock and a hard place about BMC and UCSD...

On one hand, I feel like I want a new environment that will have such a great environment like UCSD...

but at the same time, I feel like BMC will challenge me 100 percent to do better, but the lack of guys still makes me go "eh..." and to be 100 percent honest, I am so afraid of the amount of work that seems to be expected of you after hearing from the panel of students at the open house weekend.

They're very different. I'm sure you've thought of this:
UCSD: Fairly close to home, big university, more diverse student body, more familiar environment
Bryn Mawr: Across the country, small liberal arts college, probably more demanding academically, all women.

What do you want to study? Have you visted Bryn Mawr?

Just reading your post, it sound like your gut instinct is to stay with UCSD. It will save you money, so you have that.

i would imagine ucsd would be more prestigious and less expensive, as you are in-state. furthermore, i would argue ucsd would be academically more challenging, not less challenging as you expressed. but choose which school you like better. but for academics and location and price, it seems ucsd is the better choice. but if there is something specific you like about bmc, then go with that, but otherwise ucsd seems to be the clear choice. i know plenty of good students who would have given their two front teeth to get into ucsd, its one of the toughest schools in ca to get into.

These last two posts seem to be reflecting a Southern Calif regional view. On the undergraduate level, Bryn Mawr I think will provide a more challenging environment than UCSD. Some of this depends upon what you are planning to major in.

there is a frequent poster "hanna" who went to Bryn Mawr and then xferred to Harvard. You should email her and ask her to post in this thread; she has some good insight into the pluses and minuses of the school.

-No, actually i was not reflecting a regional view, unless you are so regional you do not know the academic reputation of ucsd. i know quite a bit about bmc, and while i do not feel it matches the quality of programs or academic rigor or ucsd. in no way am i bashing bmc, it is just a fact its programs do not match those of ucsd, and i feel ucsd would be significantly more challenging, especially in the sciences. i dont appreciate it when someone disagrees with my analysis that they simply refute it by stating it must be a regional view. that is not a valid way to refute an argument. it seems like you, benny1 are the one being regionally biased.

I am actually a student at BMC and would be happy to address any questions or concerns.

I had some of the same reservations about attending, especially the no guys factor. Honestly, it's not an issue. We are part of a tri-college consortium, which makes us a little different from other women's colleges. We have Haverford College five minutes away. All of my classes, with the exception of language classes, have had guys in them. Haverford guys and girls take classes at Bryn Mawr, and a large number of Bryn Mawr girls take classes at Haverford. It is VERY easy to have both the comfort of a women's college (beautiful dorms, campus, good food) and the coed experience. Making friends at Haverford involves no extra work.

The work is not as bad as they make it out to be, sometimes I think they want to scare you away! The professors are wonderful and understanding, and I have never felt completely overwhelmed or frustrated. The difference is going to a school where everyone actually cares about getting work done and is serious about their studies. If you aren't serious or passionate about learning and just want to have a good time, don't come here! We do work hard, but we have a lot of time to have fun too.

I can't say that I know anything about UCSD...but I do have friends at BMC who are from California, and like the change of pace...

Ultimately, you should do what you feel comfortable with, of course, and maybe that's staying in California.

There are a lot of things I could say about Bryn Mawr, but I tried to address your immediate concerns. If you have any questions or need guidance, you can ask here, or please feel free to email me. Good luck with your decision!
