BS Applicant Stats 2013

@PxAlaska, ORM is a long story related to affirmative action, trying to build a balanced class and such. So in the past it was used to restrict Jews and now Asians at competitive colleges.

Now is that all of “asia” considered “asian”? That seems very unfair. Chinese/Indian/Korean/Japanese are all asians, but not the same peopl by far

Life is often not considered “fair.” Instead of being the flat plains of equality that we believe it is, it is a jagged slope of cliffs and sharp valleys; on this rugged terrain, luck dictates where you start, but you determine where you end.

GoldenRatio I was hoping you’d catch it!

Applying for grade: 10
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: White (Greek/Irish - recently moved to Canada from Greece, which may or may not be a hook)
Age: 14
Financial status: Major F.A. award
Applying to: Andover & Exeter
Repeating a grade: No
Hook: Very competitive debater with considerable awards and rankings, independent researcher, published in a community-disseminated newspaper, generally inquisitive person - reflected in my manners as a writer and conversationalist, I believe.
SSAT: 94% (overall)

@Fayasi
Oh boy.
We’re both applying for grade 10 from Canada, and we’re both only applying to Exeter and Andover. TO top it off, I’m also a very competitive debater with considerable awards and rankings, I also publish through a community and city newspaper, and also a writer. My SSAT was 94% overall. Oh boy oh boy…

Applying for grade: 10th
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Hispanic (from Ecuador)
Age: 15
Financial status: Need full or almost full f/a :frowning:
Applying to: Andover, Deerfield, & St. Paul’s
Hook: Poet w/ multiple awards and strong portfolio, dancer in an elite pre-pro company, & skilled linguist with multiple Latin awards
SSAT: 90% overall (but I got 66% on math, which could hurt me)

Adding -
Recommendations: Amazing from my Lit teacher (she loves me, and writing is my best talent in school), very strong from math (I’m in advanced geo, get really good grades, and participate often in class), and amazing from dance teacher.

:)

@ballerina22
I’m also a dancer and a poet with multiple awards D:
Reading this thread is simply introducing me to better versions of myself.

Look at all these writers and poets. @Ballerina22 maybe this is ignorance on my part, but if you’re taking an advanced math class, how could your SSAT math be so low?

The SSAT does not really test a persons depth of math, and people like ballerina are everywhere. The SSAT math section covers algebra and simple geometry, but the questions have tricks to them. Since the questions seem so simple, and ballerina is in such a high math class, she probably breezed through the math section making careless mistakes along the way. This may not be the case, but that was the cause of my poor results on practice tests.

@BSROXMYSOX LOL! I don’t exactly know why I did that, just felt like it I guess… Looks like you are applying to Episcopal too! Good Luck! Just a quick question did you apply last year? How was it like on March 10th, It’s my first time…

Oh, you’re applying for Episcopal? And here I thought it was thr most hidden gem on the CC boards! Last year was positively nervewracking, honedtly. That moment before you check online to see if you were accepted or rejected seems infinite, and then your parents click and you know whether or not to brag on the threads or not. My prediction for March 2013, 13+ threads started on March 8, and some resulting in bitter online fights.

@CellyZ - OH trust me, I’m no competition for you  PM me, we should share poetry! I love finding new poets!

@PxAlaska - I honestly don’t know why, but for some reason, the math section was super hard for me this year. I also made the mistake of guessing for some questions that I honestly did not know the answer to. Last year, math was my highest section. I think @wavyboy2017 is right, too, because even in my normal math class, the bulk of the points that come off tests/quizzes/homeworks for me are careless errors :stuck_out_tongue: oops! Hopefull all will work out.

@CellyZ I play football and basketball rather than dance, though, so that may be a differentiating point? Good luck!

@Fayasi
Way to play the only other 2 sports I play too. I grew up in a Celtics/Patriots family, so it’s scary how closely our applications will mirror each other!

GoldenRatio:

Recommendations:
English: Amazing! Loves my writing style (though I personally believe it’s too grandiose), and raved to me about how some have natural writing talents, and that I was one of those people.
Math: Decent. I’m in Algebra I Honors right now; it’s the stupid version of the Honors track. I had a very bad grade in Quarter 1, since I skipped Pre-Algebra; my teacher appreciates my effort, though.
Personal: It glowed! My personal recommendator has known me for such a long time, and I was allowed to see the recommendation. It was awesome and just gushing with praise.
School: My principal got this one, but is also famously apathetic. I’m crossing my fingers!

*@ballerina22: Ooh, I’m a dancer, too! And I’m a decent writer; not very good, though…:stuck_out_tongue: Everyone here is tough competition; the applicant pool is fierce!

@CellyZ: At least you PLAY a sport! I am the most klutzy, uncoordinated athletics-hater girl you’ll ever meet! So don’t worry!*

Applying for grade: 9th
Gender: Female
Ethnicity: Asian (I’m not a citizen, but I’m a resident. Does that count as international?)
Age: 13
Financial status: Full Pay
Applying to: Exeter and Lawrenceville
Hook: Co-Chair of Charity organization for orphaned girls school in India
Classical Indian Dance for 5 years
Fusion Dancing for 8 years
Violin for 6 years
SSAT: 99% overall. I think it was really a matter of luck, though…the test was a lot easier than the practice tests.
SAT: I took it in seventh grade, but I don’t know the percentage. 2060 raw score.
(Compared to some of you, I feel like I failed >.<)

Recommendations:
I honestly have NO idea…we have really huge classes, like 30 people, so none of my teachers really know me individually.
I got a good recommendation from my dance teacher and my counselor, though.

If you are a US resident (with a green card), you are considered a US applicant, not international.

Thank you, JQuinn!
My parents were a bit unhelpful when I asked them >.<

Purpleswirl. You kicked my ass in stats so at least you got that under your belt.
