BS Computer Science

Does Cal Poly SLO have a great computer science program? What companies do they get recruited into? How about Business admin with Information systems concentration? If i do the business admin, i’ll do a Computer science minor.

Great? The Cal Poly CS program is WONDERFUL. My dad hires for one of the biggest companies in California and they stack Cal Poly up with Stanford and MIT when selecting employees. It has a great reputation because of the learn by doing. I cant stress enough how good Cal Poly is at producing great engineers and then placing them strait into industry.

Well, one of my good friends got recruited for an internship at Google while attending Cal Poly and now works there, and I know a few others who ended up at Microsoft. Most of these people even got offers half a year before graduation. The fact of the matter is, when it comes to programming, if you’re good, you’re good, no matter where you go to school, Sure, going to a top school might help get you noticed, but a good company will also be trying to find the best talent. That being said, Cal Poly’s program is quite good. I know Microsoft recruits from Cal Poly, and I believe Apple, Amazon, Cisco, LinkedIn and Google also attended the most recent careers fairs, as well as a a number of top smaller companies.

Here’s a link to the graduate status reports, where you can see where some recent graduates work. It’s searchable by major: http://www.careerservices.calpoly.edu/content/student/gsr_report</a>

I don’t know as much about the information systems concentration, but pairing a Business/IS major with a computer science minor is a good combination if you’re looking to go into project management. The business program at Cal Poly is also quite good, and I know some companies, including some tech companies, recruit business majors pretty heavily, such as HP, Oracle and Cisco.

If you can get a good internship while you’re in school, that definitely helps too with getting a job after graduation!
