BS EE -> MS CE -> PhD CS?

I have a bachelors in electrical engineering and am currently working. I plan to go back to school soon for a master's in computer engineering so that I can focus more on microprocessors and embedded systems. If I like what I am studying enough and if I gear it towards computer science, i.e. the firmware/software interface of hardware, can I get accepted into a Computer Science program for Ph.D? I feel at my current point, I am unequipped with the background or skills necessary for computer science but know I have aptitude for it based on some side coding projects.

I want to do much more than just learn software coding, like machine learning and artificial intelligence.

OK, why do CE then? You should point toward a M.S. in CS. Getting a Masters is probably a good idea if you do not have a lot of CS background but you should check the entrance requirements for the programs you are interested in to make sure.
