BS Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology

Hi,

Our son is interested in electronics. He did a electronics merit badge in boy scouts and that "sparked" an interest. Last Christmas we gave him a "Nerd Kit" which he has really enjoyed. He has done many of the projects and some on his own programming with C. His math is a little weak. He is a senior in HS and received an A in Geometry, B in Algebra 2 and C in Pre-Calculus. We are not sure of his capacity for math and electronics engineering. He got an A in HS Physics (non-AP). I am a retired EE. He got 3's and a 4 of AP subjects.

We are familiar with CP SLO as his sister is a alumni in business. Not sure is he can get into SLO. He was not interested in UC Irvine. Those are the schools we have looked at.

We took a college trip to Cal Poly Pomona and talked to a professor and dept. head in the E&CET program. It seems like a sound curriculum concentrating on "applications" of electronics and computer engineering. There are 150 students and 5 full time faculty according to the professor. The job prospects are there with employers in a 50 mile radius of LA. Samples of employment for alumni look promising from what the examples were. I like it that the students receive a BS and can join IEEE and sit for the PE exam.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this program at CPP or any other public school offering it, (not Devry). Does the Navy accept this towards any officer programs?

Thanks ahead of time.....

If your son wants to go far away, UMD has an excellent computer engineering program. I just posted on another thread that his job prospects were excellent (he graduates in the Spring) and has already accepted an offer. They have an honors program as well as an ECE honors program (few kids seem to complete the ECE honors requirements though - not sure why). I do know that UMD has a very active IEEE organization. My son was even able to get one of the IEEE scholarships. Overall, he is very pleased with the education he received at UMD in computer engineering.

Your son is not running at the front of the pack so look at mid tier schools that he can get admittance.
Where does he show interest in going?
What are his SAT/ACT scores?
gpa
Just throwing some school out there since you seem to want to keep him instate.

Realistically, your son needs to cast a wide net and send in multiple applications.
He needs to investigate schools that he can change majors in case his weak math skills forces him to rethink his major, like UCR, UCM and CSUs
Thinking UCI is out because he doesn’t want to live at home, correct?
