Would this keep you from getting into the top 20 or so schools?

No because APs are looked at because they are more rigorous courses.
It looks better than 100s in seminar or the easiest classes you could take because you are challenging and you are working hard. It'll pay off. =]

Bs are fine. Almost everyone who applies to the top 20 have similar creds (mostly As, tons of APs, high SAT/ACT), so watch out for your ECs as your make or break b/c those are more looked into in the top schools.

Not at all, though it may lower your chances.

I'm currently a junior taking two Ap Classes. One of them is Ap Biology, and have got a C ( which will show up as a B on report cards) for the first and second marking period ( though in the rest of my classes I got all A's throughout). I have no regrets in taking Ap Biology and plan to countinue with the class. Nor do I think my chances for any top school is ruled out.

As long as your heart is not set on UMich who treats all B's as 3.0 you should be fine......

Yeah, I'm just worried they're almost ALL B's. And I have 5.

I'm just hoping the AP scores will make up for it...?

yeah AP scores make up for them....also class rank...and your chances are fine don't worry about it

omg, I’m basically in a similar situation. What would colleges think of this?

(grade/AP score)

AP Lang. - A-/4
AP Macro- B+/4
AP Biology- B/5
AP Calculus AB- B+/3 (ouch) (though, I did get a 730 on Math II, so maybe they’ll think I’m not a complete loser in math?)
AP US History- B+/3 (ouch again)

Idk…considering i’m applying to the top 15…I feel sort of, if not completely screwed…

lol, same exact situation here :|

A High AP/low class grade makes you look like a slacker while the opposite reeks of grade inflation. A few Bs is not the end of the world, though, and ECs/recs/essays/interview can compensate in part.

^how does a low class score make u look like a slacker if, say, you’re taking 4 APs. lol, in my school u have to WORK for those Bs :P

same situation here.

would SAT and decent EC compensate for it?

TheyCallMeCC: I don’t doubt that. However, thousands of other kids around the country manage to get good grades and test scores, so your competition will always pose a problem.

gashergina: Yes, scores of 750+ on SAT IIs might compensate somewhat.

I suppose the situation at different schools is different. At my school, for instance, it doesn’t take much to get an A, so if you don’t it would look kind of bad on your transcript. Getting high scores on SATIIs would definitely help in your case.

There is more misinformation on this thread than most. B’s anytime will hurt for highly selective schools, but junior year B’s in AP classes will make top school especially tough.

so I’m a slacker AND have grade inflation =/

Oy vey.

Will Bs mean that you’re never going to get into any decent college? No. But the top schools can and will accept people who have the same ECs and test scores, but didn’t get Bs in AP classes.

For junior year, I think your grades will be cross-referenced with the AP score for the class. A couple of B’s and an AP score of 4+ should work. A couple of B’s and an AP score of 1-3 would probably be a red flag.
