BS in Computer Science after AAS in Computer Information Systems.

Hi there,

After some deliberation, I have decided that the best way out for me to survive is going to an Community College and earn an Associate degree in Computer Information Systems. Now, I have some questions which I would like you all to answer.

I actually wanted to take admission in SUNY at Stony Brook. But, I have then revoked the idea due to the high fees for Out-state students (I am in India for 13 years). Is it possible to transfer my credits earned during the AAS towards BS in Computer Science at Stony Brook or other campuses?
Will I be considered in-state, since I have stayed for two years in New York by then?
Which community colleges should be good- the CUNY ones or the SUNY ones?
Is SAT required for entering community colleges or while transfering towards BS after AAS?
Are there rooms and boards options at community colleges? If yes, which is more economical- staying at college campus or staying on rent?
Is it possible to get a Computer Job after the AAS degree? (I can then support myself while completing BS.)
How much will it actually cost if I consider all costs (including boards and foods) and how much financial aid can I obtain?
My mother has a prejudice that Community Colleges are not good. Is that true? I am trying to make her understand that once I transfer the credits towards an University, it will be the University name by which I will be known.

I have asked a lot of questions because I know this website is a helpful one.(I have experienced it from the previous threads.)
Thanks in advance.

Also, will it be better to do AAS in Computer Information Systems or AS in Computer Science, keeping in mind both- Job Prospects and Transfer to BS in Computer Science.

Yes, you have asked a lot of questions, the problem with asking them all in the same thread is that you mare likely to get better answers by posting specific ones on different forums.

For instance, questions pertaining to CUNY & SUNY may be more appropriate on the CUNY, SUNY (both under Colleges & Universities, Alphabetic list) or the NY colleges (under College Search & Selection, State forums) forum.

Questions about CCs should be under the Community Colleges forum (also under College Search & Selection).

There is a FA & Scholarship forum.

There is also an Engineering Majors forum.

The associates degree program in computer science is likely better preparation for transfer to a four year school in computer science than the associates degree program in computer information systems. (But note that the four year school may have its own pre-transfer requirements that may not exactly match a community college’s associates degree program, and does not necessarily require completing an associates degree to transfer.)

Computer science is more technical, for people who want to design computers and their software. Computer information systems is more business oriented and less technical, for people who want to manage computers and their software.
