Hi, I'm currently admitted to the college of L&S and I'm thinking about a computer science major. I'm taking AP Computer Science in school right now and I think the L&S CS would be more fitting for me because it's more software-oriented, but I was also a much stronger math & science student in high school than humanities student, so I find getting a BA and having to take humanities class requirements for L&S CS kind of less fitting than the BS in EECS, where I'd take more technical, math/science related classes. However, I am not admitted to the school of engineering and I heard it was very tough to get into...should I just stick with the L&S CS? Also, how do job opportunities differ between having a BS vs a BA in computer science?

If you are interested in patent law, the ABET-accredited EECS major can help; if you major in L&S CS, you want to read up on the patent exam requirements and take course work that fulfills them (e.g. additional physics or chemistry, among other things).

Requirements-wise, the humanities and social studies requirements are not necessarily easier in CoE than in L&S.

L&S requires R&C A and B plus a 7-course breadth (5 of which are in humanities and social studies, although such courses as mathematical economics, mathematical logic, history of math, etc. count in some of them). CoE requires 6 courses including R&C A and B; 2 of the courses must be upper division, and 2 (including at least 1 upper division) have to be in the same department. AP credit rules differ as well.

You can always follow the EECS curriculum, taking the additional lower division courses (Physics 7A-7B, one more science course, Math 53, EE 20N, EE 40 instead of 42) and apply; if you don’t get in, you can also apply to L&S CS. But if you don’t want to take the additional courses, you can just stick with L&S CS.
